196 - Beauty and the Beast (1946)
It's hard to watch this movie and not think of what Disney did 45 years later. If you have seen either film you know the tale
Jean Cocteau's remarkable fantasy is a definitely a great movie but it's not one that I want to revisit many more times. I watched the film on the Criterion DVD in it's original form and then re watched it again switching between two excellent commentaries.
There are many great scenes and if you listen to the commentary, many wonderful moments, like when the crew wiggle the ears with a stick when the beast sees a deer.
I really liked this movie as I watched it but felt strangely distanced a day later. I'll go with my original score of an 8 but many might not feel quite so enthused unless they plough on and re watch with the commentary.
This is one of those movies where you know you're in the presence of greatness. It's a magical film full of emotion. When we arrive at the house of the best I felt I had entered the world of Kane.
