“Meet Me in St. Louis” (1944)*

Filmed in 1944 and set in 1903 “Meet Me” is a musical-comedy time capsule in more ways than one. Esther (Judy Garland) is the focal point in the story of a large family whose roots and social lives are firmly planted in St. Louis. At an evening party, the father announces a job opportunity and pending move to NY at Christmas-time. The girls are broken; their social lives and courtings lain asunder. This movie is amazing to view. The Technicolor and cinematography are the real stars here. With plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, if you rarely watch musicals, watch this one.

Awf Hand gives 3.5 out of 4 stars, losing ½ star as I felt they used too few exterior shots, opting for sets, studio lighting and matte-paintings instead. Gaining BIG points for brilliant color and wardrobe. More points awarded for the strong, individual and interesting personalities of each child, and a grand buildup to the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair’s ultimate unveiling.
