From Zeppelin on the cinematic journey

Robert Bresson's Au Hasard Balthazar, which sits at 61 on the top 1000, might be one of the most powerful films I've ever seen, and I have no idea why. Balthazar might be the only film where my initial reaction could be described as “?” combined with the serene feeling one receives after watching something a great film. Balthazar is completely unlike anything I've seen before, both in its solumn, enveloping, pessimistic mood and the emotional freedom it offers the audience. Apparently, when filming Bresson would do 10, 20, 50 takes until the actors were completely drained of emotion. To paraphrase Ebert, this forces the viewer to add their own emotion to the proceeding.

Balthazar isn't all viewer made though. It's constructed in such a way that it envelops the viewer inside of it. Even though the characters themselves are devoid of emotion, Balthazar placed me in such a state that I succumbed my own emotion to it, becoming wrapped in the story and characters. Even after reading some essays I'm unsure what it was trying to say, but I don't it matters too much. Au Hasard Balthazar is a transcendent film experience. 10/10
