New Regime Poll #6: City of God or Pan's Labyrinth
It's a bit of a facile comparison, but there's two of the best-reviewed, most-liked foreign films of the last decade and they both occupy high spaces on my Top 25 list, as well as my "Best of the 00s" list. So, which one's better?

Like both to the same-ish tune but slightly prefer the allegory of Pan's Labyrinth.

City of God places easily in my Top 5. Pan's Labyrinth, on the other hand, is a very good movie but it doesn't quite have the same visceral impact on me.

Both of them are incredible films, but Pan's Labyrinth is my pick. Actually, it's my pick for film of the decade.

Both films are somewhere in my all time top fifty, but Pan's is a little higher if I recall correctly. On 364 out of 365 days of the year, I prefer del Toro's masterpiece. I love the idea of a fairytale for adults.

Two great films, but I say City of God, which has a larger, grander dramatic arc.

Yeah I feel guilty even making a choice, as it causes me to come up with reasons why one of them is worse. Nonetheless, I did

I simply can't decide between the two. I'll just mention that Pans Labarynth is one of the most beautiful looking films I've seen.

Welcome to the forum Arron. Pan's Labyrinth is indeed a gorgeous film, but City of God is no slouch in this regard either

Re: New Regime Poll #6: City of God or Pan's Labyrinth
How is this even a fair question? Pan's Labyrinth is incredibly overrated and City of God is among the finest films ever made. No contest.

Incredibly overrated? You're pretty much the only person on that island buddy. A singular film, with more vision in any frame than most movies offer in their entire running length, Pan's Labyrinth is amazing

I've played God a little here and cast what is so far the deciding vote in favour of Pan.
I do like City of God though. A f*cking real eye-opener!

Re: New Regime Poll #6: City of God or Pan's Labyrinth
Glad to know things up for City of God. I respect Guillermo Del Toro's vision, but it's no contest here; possibly one of the best fantastical films of the last decade (it is squarely behind LOTR in pretty much every aspect of the film experience) against perhaps the very best drama of the decade? Sign me up for the latter. It's still the only modern film good enough to merit comparisons to GoodFellas and earn at least *some* of that staggering acclaim.
