Episode #7: Return to Oz (Again)
The Oscars are over, and that means it's time for Hollywood to release the "forgettables". This week, we return to Oz (for a second time), shoot things up with Colin Farrell, and get stoked for Stoker, but first, let's take some time to look back at home I did last week.
1. Jack the Giant Slayer - *** (Predicted: **1/2) Had I chosen to edit my predictions later on in the week, I would have gone with the full ***. James tends to enjoy harmless works of pop entertainment (read blockbuster fluff in book), and this seems right up his alley. Jack the Giant Slayer falls into the same category as John Carter and Snow White and the Huntsman. Take that anyway you want.
2. Phantom - *** (Predicted: *1/2) Thank goodness James added this to his Upcoming Reviews... list later on in the week, as I would have lost a ton of points had I included it then. Phantom currently sits at a (deserving) 18% on Rotten Tomatoes, but James seemed to have fun with it. Either way, I said that no one would lose points for predicting this film. Instead, points could be gained for guessing correctly. No one did that, and so Phantom vanishes away into the void of cinematic nothingness. Nice knowing you, Russian submariners.
Here are the titles that we will be predicting this week:
1. Dead Man Down - *** This is a tougher title to predict, as it is director Niels Arden Oplev's (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) first English film. James was a big fan of what Oplev did with Stieg Larssen's popular crime novel, so I can see him being a bit more lenient here. The "R" rating might earn Dead Man Down even more points. Either way, I am going to play it safe here. Three stars out of four.
2. Oz: The Great and Powerful - **1/2 In my honest opinion, Oz is even harder to predict than Dead Man Down. On the one hand, nearly all of Sam Raimi's films have earned a score of ***. On the other hand, Raimi's most recent two titles (Spider-Man 3, Drag Me to Hell) have earned only **. It might be a bit too cutesy for its own good, and the fact that it could potentially tarnish the legacy of a great classic film might not sit well with James. Two and a half stars out of four.
3. Stoker - **1/2 James never got around to reviewing Stoker this week, so feel free to update your predictions if you so desire. Oldboy received *** back in 2003, and Stoker just seems like something too strange for James to enjoy. I doubt that it will cross the three-star mark, but it should still do fairly well. Two and a half stars out of four.
Have fun, and next week, we toss together predictions for The Call, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and perhaps 56 Up.

Re: Week #10: Return to Oz (Again)
Dead Man Down: *** Oz: The Great And Powerful: ** Stoker: **1/2
I think I'm going to make it my goal to unintentionally guess incorrectly on everything. Not sure if I've gotten anything right so far.

If Jack the Giant Slayer got 3 stars, then surely Oz will get that much. I think Oz looks a lot better.
Dead Man Down: *** Oz the Great and Powerful: *** Stoker: ** 1/2
