You May Ask Yourself - "How Did James Get Here?" (Week 34)
On The Wings Of The AntichristTuesday, October 20: ANTICHRIST Friday, October 23: AMELIA Saturday, October 24: WINGS (1927) After two straight weeks of glorious horrible life-affirming failures (especially with his favorite song - which was Steve Winwood's "Back In The High Life"), this week you all have the chance to claw your way back to redemption with a set of difficult choices (but nevertheless from an advantaged perspective; Lars Von Trier's punishing and vivid horror film "Antichrist" has been extensively covered in a recent edition of Reel Thoughts, and the few people who have seen the original Best Picture-winner, "Wings", will probably have some idea of what to expect from James' review). Joining this privileged lot is the Mira Nair-helmed Amelia Earhart biopic, imaginatively titled 'Amelia'. Altogether this promises to be an interesting week - if people don't get tripped up by Von Trier's gory excesses first. Best of luck, everybody

ANTICHRIST - 0 stars AMELIA - **1/2 WINGS - ***
I'm probably off on Antichrist and I do wanna see it but I didn't really notice any real praise to it on the TIFF page.
Oh....STEVE WINWOOD! Does anybody in this forum know who he is...besides me.

Antichrist - 3.0 I refuse to speculate that this will see less than 3 stars. Is James by chance re-seeing this before reviewing it? If so I'll go even higher... Amelia - 3.0 Mira Nair? Wings - 3.5 I got nothing
Go, go Bondurant (or anyone else who plans to subject JB to Salo)

Re: You May Ask Yourself - "How Did James Get Here?" (Week 34)
Antichrist - ** The tone of James' Toronto review definitely reads like a 2-star review. Certainly, the strong acting will be enough to offset the shock factor but not enough for a favorable rating.
Amelia - *** A biopic starring Hilary Swank and directed by Mira Nair sounds pretty solid to me. Could Swank be up for yet another Oscar nomination because of this...? Wings - *** The very first Best Picture Oscar winner, but it likely hasn't aged all that well...not that it won't still be worth seeing.

I have seen it twice. I understood it a little better the second time, but didn't like it any better. I have, however, resolved the issue of how many stars to give it (something I wrote about in the TIFF discussion).

"call on me," actually. That song is about a drug addict who killed herself (or died of an overdose - I don't remember which), based on a real-life incident.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like less than 3 stars, but I'm stubborn.
