if going away for 6 mos. -- what 10 dvd's would you take
Author Message
Post Re: if going away for 6 mos. -- what 10 dvd's would you take
I'm with Roger Ebert: a "great movie" is one you can't bear the thought of never seeing again. (Let alone for six months.)

Here are my picks:

The Rules of the Game
Citizen Kane
Pickpocket
12 Angry Men
2001: A Space Odyssey
Taxi Driver
Superman
Amadeus
The Big Lebowski
Adaptation.

I had to make a lot of painful cuts, but these are the films that affect me most, are made with the most intriguing craftsmanship, and so on. I did limit the list to one film per director, which made it a little easier.

Ummmm . . . that pretty much IS my definition of favorite.

I'd pick my top ten favorite flicks at the moment. As soon as I ended up on the island (or whatever hypothetical situation), my list would probably change. However, that list of 10 is the list I'd have chosen at the moment I made the list, and it's what I'd have to live with for the 6 months.

Good topic.

1. Memento
2. An Evening With Kevin Smith
3. Decalogue
4. Berlin Alexanderplatz
5. Shoah
6. Intolerance
7. Let the Right One In
8. The Deer Hunter
9. Mulholland Drive
10. Citizen Kane

I have not seen 4, 5, and 6.

Ken

We're talking about these two movies on the cinematic journey thread!

Great choices

Here are my picks.

Spiderman 2003: If you're a Spiderman fan this an amazing adaption.

Pulp Fiction: I think this was termed the greatest film of the nineties. No arguement from me.

Casino Royale: Easily one of the best Bond films, the best in terms of quality, otherwise go for Tomorrow Never Dies.

Die Hard: Certainly one of the meatiest action films ever made. This movie never drags or pads along like so many others do.

24 season 1: Is it a cheat to have a six DVD series? If not then this has to be included.

Road Trip: This film is wrong on so many levels, but that's what makes it so entertaining to watch.

Lethal Weapon: Just the first one.

Actually I think that's all I can come up with.

Ya dude, you cheated. Pick your favorite 4 dvds from 24 S1 and you're good. I would pick the last 4, and If I could pick only one, it would definitely be disc 6.

Okay. Replace 24 with The Sarah Connor Chronicles, I think that's only three discs, and Terminator 2. That would do me.

Hmmm...10 movies that I could watch over and over again (and some of them will be truly outlandish and ridiculous)

1. 10 Things I Hate About You.
2. Grease
3. When Harry Met Sally.
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. 13 Going on 30
6. Definitely Maybe
7. Muppet Christmas Carol
8. The Care Bear Movie
9. Mary Poppins
10. Spiderman 2

Trust me, those aren't the best quality movies most of them--but for some reason I am able to re-watch them over and over again. Most of them are symbolic about a point in my life. Or some of them just make me...happy.

I already submitted my list, but I got bored and started thinking about the loophole presented in the heading.

Here's another thought where I don't think I am "technically" breaking the rules. If I assume that most movies (and I am only talking about the movie and audio, not menus, and not special features etc) contain around 4.7 GB of data, then that would mean 10 movies in 10 dvd's contain ~ 47 Gb of data. If I use my 80 GB ipod video classic (and to take pirating out of the equation for now, I will only use movies from itunes), and I assume that each movie downloaded from itunes is approximately 1 GB, then that would allow me to take around 47 movies along with me give or take (10). The quality wouldn't be as great when I plugged my ipod into a tv, but oh well, I've got around 50 movies now.

Agreed. I have a lot of movies that would get a very high rating from me and I would call favorites, but I wouldn't want to be "desert island" picks. 6 months isn't really very long, tho.

My list:

My Fair Lady
While You Were Sleeping
The Shawshank Redemption
Seabiscuit
Das Boat
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Midnight Run
That's Entertainment!
Glory
Braveheart

I say you're breaking the rules...and thinking way too much about this.

I agree with Patrick....way too much thinking going on here. We're not saying you have so much space for movies...you have 10 DVDs. And no, I didn't intend for TV to be included. Maybe I should've just said 10 MOVIES.

The Royal Tenenbaums
Pulp Fiction
The Thin Red Line
Mulholland Drive
Wonder Boys
Synecdoche, New York
True Romance
Barry Lyndon
Withnail and I
Happiness

I have not seen the final 5. I agree with majoraphasia: I'd like to see some movies I've never seen before.

The first 5 just kind of came to me because I'd like to see them again.

Primarily considering re-watchability:

Koyaanisqatsi
The Abominable Dr. Phibes
The Apartment
A Clockwork Orange
Cabaret
Sleuth (original version)
Don't Look Now
Vertigo
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Big Trouble in Little China
Hatari
Jaws
Office Space
Pulp Fiction
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Shaolin Soccer
This is Spinal Tap
Tombstone
Tremors

These are movies I could watch over and over (and have). Good quotable dialogue, action/comedy.

Funny...these aren't all on my top ten list, but they're probably the movies I've watched the most times.

My approach here would be less "which couldn't I live without" and more "which do I know I could watch over and over without getting bored." Even some of my very favorite movies, like Godfather and the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, I don't know if I could watch over and over for 6 months without them somehow losing something. Overall it would need to be fairly eclectic.

Rocky
Shawshank Redemption (I once watched this one back to back on TNT when I was in high school, so... yeah, I think this makes the shortlist)
Untitled (the Almost Famous Director's Cut--I don't even necessarily like Untitled better as a movie, but in this scenario the more Almost Famous the better)
Independence Day
The Rundown
The Big Lebowski
Children of Men
Chappelle's Show, Season 2, disc 2 (This was a difficult decision, but "Black Bush," "Kneehigh Park," and especially "Wayne Brady Show" just barely trump "Rick James," "Prince," and "White People Can't Dance," and "Sam Jackson Beer.")
Arrested Development, Season 3, disc 1 (The entire MR F storyline)

...

The Big Lebowski
The Big Lebowski fits into both categories for me.

Like some others... these aren't necessarily my favorite 10 movies, but here goes...

Godfather
Godfather 2
Bottle Rocket
The Big Lebowski
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
Goodfellas
Rocky
Crimes & Misdemeanors
Boogie Nights
City of God

Whew... that was tougher than I thought it'd be.

1. Pan's Labyrinth - Love this movie and I can interpret it differently every time, increasing it's rewatchability.

2. The Dark Knight- No movie entertains and thrills me quite like this movie does, and I could watch it another 10 times despite seeing it 5 times already and still not get bored.

3. Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix- My personal favorite Potter flick and one of my favorite fantasy movies. I've seen it at least 6 times that I remember and loved it every time.

4. Memento- I've seen it 3 times and get caught up in it every time, and it such a complex movie I might find something new out that I didn't catch before.

5. Sweeney Todd- I love the music and listen to the soundtrack all the time, but the imagery and performances are great and I love watching it.

6. The Matrix- It makes me think and I love the special effects and action. I try to watch it at least once a year anyway.

7. Rachel Getting Married- Love this movie and the way it is shot really brings it to life. It packs an emotional punch too, which I like. Anne Hathaway is astounding.

8. Halloween- My favorite horror movie and if I want to scare the crap out of myself it's perfect for that.

9. The Prestige- Basically the same reasons as Memento. What a coincidence that they are both directed by Nolan.

10. Superbad- If I want to laugh my head off it's the perfect movie for it.

I would put Adventureland on this list if it was out on DVD.
