Best Decade...

Post Re: Best Decade...
The 90's most certainly ended up being a better film-making decade than the 80's and absolutely better than the 00's, which ended up being a disappointment. However, the 90's had a lot of fat as well. There were certain things about each decade that are worth mention; for one, if you limited the 80's and 90's to American film-making, then the 90's wins so hard that the match has to be called after one round. The 80's were a horrific domestic decade for film. As for indies, the 90's was full of them - aside from just my personal indie champion Clean, Shaven (which remains the best use of a minimalist budget out there) - that were easily more influential than anything spawned in the previous decade. If you simply list the better films of the 80's, it looks more well-rounded, but truly, looking back it was a very sad decade for film, and planted seeds that have blossomed into, well, Transformers 3 (a product birthed in the 80's that was inevitably conceived the minute Flashdance was released).

For my money, I'd say that the 70s was the best decade. But for a close runner-up, how about the 2000s? Here's some of what came out that decade:

Almost Famous
Battle Royale
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Dancer In The Dark
Memento
O Brother Where Art Thou
Requiem For A Dream
Sexy Beast
Traffic
Yi Yi
Fat Girl
Gosford Park
Lord of the Rings
Mulholland Drive
Sex and Lucia
25th Hour
Adaptation
Bowling For Columbine
City of God
Far From Heaven
Gangs of New York
The Pianist
Road to Perdition
Talk To Her
Bad Santa
Elephant
Kill Bill
Matchstick Men
Mystic River
Team America: World Police
Sideways
Million Dollar Baby
The Aviator
Good Night And Good Luck
Syriana
Brokeback Mountain
King Kong
Munich
United 93
The Departed
Babel
Apocalypto
Children of Men
Pan's Labyrinth
Zodiac
Grindhouse
Shaun of the Dead
Eastern Promises
Into The Wild
No Country For Old Men
Juno
Charlie Wilson's War
There Will Be Blood
The Dark Knight
Milk
Che
Frost/Nixon
Gran Torino
The Wrestler
Revolutionary Road
Adventureland
Moon
Precious
Up In The Air

I'd say that's a pretty impressive collection of films for the decade.

I enjoy alot of those films, but the bolded films are the only ones would I consider 'great' on any level. Most of the other films range from 'good' to 'puzzling', and very few are resounding successes. This is not to say I don't enjoy a good deal of them, if not most, but I would neglect almost 80-85% of them in a conversation about great films.

Yeah, I would agree that there were plenty of excellent films to be found during the 00's but it pales in comparison to the decade that immediately preceded it. In fact, I feel that one of Evenflow's quotes about the 80's could just as easily apply here: "If you simply list the better films of the [00's], it looks more well-rounded, but truly, looking back it was a very sad decade for film." I would hasten to add that things aren't looking much better as we move forward into this new decade but at least we've had one truly great film so far: The Social Network.

There are many films on that list that I liked and would consider to be good. But like Evenflow, there's only a few (the ones I italicized) that I would consider to be great. In some ways, the 2000s was the 80s reincarnated.
