Poor Performaces in Otherwise Good Films
Orlando Bloom in Kingdom of Heaven. Ok, the film got mixed reviews but I wager most of the poorer ones were because of him.
Reeves in Dracula. Need I say more?
Anymore stand out for people?

I liked Gran Torino, but most of the performances in the film were terrible. Even Ahney Her's performance, which was really good in parts, was grating on me occasionally.

Re: Poor Performaces in Otherwise Good Films
They all very much a supporting cast weren't they. It was an Eastwood-centric flick for sure.

Ryan Reynolds in Buried. I know he received a lot of praise for that role but most of my dislikes are because of him and his performance.

Re: Poor Performaces in Otherwise Good Films
An all-time favorite of mine is Jean Harlow in The Public Enemy, which is otherwise a great film. This was before Harlow took acting lessons (and it was discovered she was talented at comedy), and I have the theory that she was instructed to act like a woman who had undergone a lobotomy. She's also pretty bad in Hell's Angel's, which is a pretty good film much of the time.

Interesting that you say that today. None of than Bill Simmons just devoted half of an entire column to the guy: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6716942/the-movie-star

I really like the movie a lot more than other people seem to but Kate Capshaw in Temple of Doom is grating still.

Capshaw was one of the first ones I thought of. I'll add the often cited Sofia Coppola in Godfather III.

While not awful I don't think I would call Godfather III a good film.

Cloris Leachman's squawk in "Castle in the Sky" Robert Pine (Chris's Dad) in "Confession"
I'm sure I'll think of more later, but it's 3am here.

Re: Poor Performaces in Otherwise Good Films
How do you feel about Marilyn? She was clearly never a great actress, but I've found her performances to range anywhere from acceptable to good. Of course, I could have been distracted. I'll get on that shortly, thanks much for the link. I'll have to check in to Grantland more often. Simmons has suddenly gotten prolific since launch.

Re: Poor Performaces in Otherwise Good Films
I'd say you do. While I could probably guess what you're going to say, I'd rather not see Reelviewers joining the groupthink crowd in taking for granted that so-and-so is a bad actor or that such-and-such is a bad movie. And on that note... I would. Compared to the vast majority of movies, it is at the very least a good movie. No, it isn't as good as the other two, but very few movies are. Here's a fun thought experiment: compare The Godfather, Part III to any movie released this year. ----- Getting back on topic, I found Peter Sellers tremendously distracting in Lolita. While there are many movies that make good use of his style, he stuck out like a sore thumb among the relatively subdued performers in this one.

Penelope Cruz in Blow
I almost put Julia Roberts in The Mexican before I remembered that The Mexican is not exactly a good movie.

Re: Poor Performaces in Otherwise Good Films
I thought she was best in Bus Stop and good in Some Like it Hot and her little bit in All About Eve. She never was as bad as Harlow was around 1929 -31, but after that ( Red Dust, Bombshell, Libeled Lady for Dinner at Eight, for instance), I like Harlow better. I'm sure Monroe had her bad days, but I've missed them.

Most of the cast of Starship Troopers - though I suspect that was intentional. Ingrid Boulting in The Last Tycoon Craig Wasson in Body Double
I agree with the mention of Sofia Coppola in The Godfather Part III. I think the movie itself is good - it's not the equal of parts I and II, but it's far better than its bad rep would suggest. Sofia made the right choice by switching to directing, though.

In all fairness to Sofia, she was a last minute replacement.

Re: Poor Performaces in Otherwise Good Films
True, she did get thrown in at the deep end. I wonder how the movie would have turned out if Winona Ryder had been able to play Mary Corleone.
