The Boy in the Striped Pajamas' placement in the list can be explained in much the same way as that of Blindness. One question... how could you feel unmoved? Sure, the Holocaust is a beaten dead horse of a subject, but this film looks at it through innocent and unknowing eyes which makes it that much more emotional and transcending. Making good, but not great Hollywood efforts like The Reader look well... ridiculous.

Hi Shelobfan

I really wanted to like THBISP but ultimately the ending (no spoilers here) failed to move me because I saw it coming a mile off and that the mechanics of the script and direction were clumsy and designed purely to get me to an emotional place. I actually felt a little ashamed that this had been done.

I also feel that the film was cheating on me a little. This reaction came afterwards. The problem here is that to discuss this you have to give away the plot and the ending. I won't do that. Let's just say that the portrayal of the death camp was tonally wrong for the main thrust of the story.

I totally understand why this film may work well for most people. If you get past the first issue it could be a very powerful and memorable movie. Certainly worth a watch.

I think i've seen most of the end of year films now to make a decision for a list, possible contenders I haven't seen are Let the Right One Inand Milk. My list may seem a little mainstream but overall I thought 2008 was a fairly weak year compared to 2007 (although the top 4 of mine i'd consider very strong in any year), I wasn't as taken as most people were with Slumdog (3 out of 4), Revolutionary Road (2.5 out of 4) and especially Benjamin Button (2 out of 4).

10. The Bank Job
9. Burn After Reading
8. Frost/Nixon
7. Frozen River
6. In Bruges
5. The Visitor
4. Wall-E
3. Doubt
2. The Dark Knight
1. The Wrestler

I've seen a paltry 31 films from 2008, so this Top 10 is subject to constant change. So far, I think 2008 was a much weaker year than 2007.

01. The Dark Knight 9/10 - I'm actually disappointed that no other film toppled this from its spot.
02. Doubt 8/10 - a bit too much heavy handed symbolism. The best acted film of 2008.
03. Låt den rätte komma in 8/10 - really liked this one. Hated the CG cat attack. Hated it.
04. Gran Torino 8/10 - I thought Clint's un-pc character was hilarious.
05. WALL·E 8/10 - The scenes on Earth were perfect. The rest was pretty cool too.
06. Milk 8/10 - Best Sean Penn performance I've seen (Haven't seen Dead Man as yet  )
07. Slumdog Millionaire 8/10 - Another good Danny Boyle movie. Don't think it's his best though.
08. The Wrestler 8/10 - I used to be hooked on wrestling. Tons of guys really end up like that.
09. Vals Im Bashir 8/10 - A gorgeous film...cool porno scene.
10. Wendy and Lucy 8/10 - This could've ended up really melodramatic. Kudos for the minimalistic treatment.

Other 8/10 movies:
Burn After Reading
Frozen River
Happy-Go-Lucky
Rachel Getting Married
Revolutionary Road
Vicky Cristina Barcelona

As long as we're staring to post out top twenties, I'll throw in mine with a revised top ten, plus commentary and ratings.

20. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (B+) - Forrest Gump 2 be damned.
19. Encounters at the End of the World (B+) - so weird, it's likable.
18. The Visitor (B+) - one of the best screenplays of the year and some of the best work I've seen Richard Jenkins do. Props to the rest of the case, too, though.
17. Milk (B+) - a very easy film to respect.
16. Frost/Nixon (B+) - see above.
15. Happy-Go-Lucky (B+) - Mike Leigh triumphs again.
14. Zack and Miri Make a Porno (B+) - so damn funny.
13. Iron Man (A-) - an unexpected delight.
12. Frozen River (A-) - Really beautiful, really moving, really well-acted.
11. Rachel Getting Married (A-) - I respect everything about this film and I love Anne Hathaway to death.
10. Gran Torino (A-) - I enjoyed this film way more than I should have.
9. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (A-) - so damn funny.
8. Man on Wire (A-) - the most beautiful documentary of the year. Petit's a great storyteller.
7. WALL-E (A-) - duh.
6. The Wrestler (A-) - this might place lower in the future - especially since I just saw L' Enfant - but you have to love Mickey Rourke.
5. Entre les muirs (A-) - an anti-Dead Poets Society, if you will.
4. Låt den rätte komma in (A-) - it works on almost every single level and works so damn well.
3. U2 3D (A) - it's kind of a masterpiece.
2. The Dark Knight (A) - it's the best superhero film I've seen by a long shot.
1. Slumdog Millionaire (A) - a weak A, but an A no less. I just loved it. It's one of those movies you fall in love with.

Cool list Pedro, great diversity. Don't agree with them all but that's not the point :-)
