Your Top 10 Favorite Films Are..?
Author Message
Post Re: Your Top 10 Favorite Films Are..?
My list is very approximate, and I always find it difficult to judge between adjacent films. A few years back I had a Top 20 that I was pretty settled on kept at ymdb.com, but that site (and shompy.com where it moved to) now seems defunct. My list would look something like this though:

10. Back to the Future
9. 25th Hour
8. Schindler's List
7. Run Lola Run
6. The Dark Knight
5. Fight Club
4. The Insider
3. The Shawshank Redemption
2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
1. Memento

I am fairly sure I am overlooking a least a couple of films that belong in there though. Anyway, it's good to be here on the forums, looking forward to more such discussion and debate!

Seeya,

Good to see Memento in the top one! XD 25th Hour's pretty good; I haven't seen it in a long time. I really want to see Run Lola Run, too.

Yes, Run Lola Run is great, a nice short film (~80 minutes) you should be able to fit in amongst any busy schedule. :)

Thanks for the nice compliment. I think everyone here is likely very knowlegable and of good taste. otherwise why would we be here?

I think LOTR was a phenomenon of it's time.

I genuinely loved no.2, was bored by no.1 and thought the last 20 minutes of no.3 damaged a great movie. i could not help feeling that it all became this great juggernaut.

That said, it is a wonderful trilogy, just not my favorite movies.

When I was younger, I was absolutely nuts about Lord of the Rings - seeing it come to life on screen after loving the books made me realize what film could do, and for the past eight years I've been a huge film aficianado as a result. If I had been born even four or five years earlier, LOTR would not be on my list - but, alas, due to my circumstances, it is. Funny how life works, eh?

And it's great to have a new forum of film lovers to go to - a far, far cry from the IMDB forums (or, as I like to call them "Forum Hell") which I visited for 3 minutes and then gave up.

100% agree with this being a great new place to visit

Post Re: Your Top 10 Favorite Films Are..?
the top ten I have posted in my website is the following...

1. The Godfather
2. Schindler's List
3. The Maltese Falcon
4. Casablanca
5. Memento
6. Lord of the Rings III
7. Goodfellas
8. Star Wars Episode V
9. Raiders of the Lost Ark
10. Children of Men

but since writing it up I've seen many more amazing films, so I'm planning to changing it any time soon. I'd probably include In Bruges, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Blade Runner The Final Cut, The Dark Knight, or Wall-E. Unfortunately, because of those damn, late Peruvian release dates, the only Oscar bait movie I've seen in Button, so I can't say anything about movies like Slumdog Millionaire or The Wrestler.

Wow... every list on here is pretty wonderful!

10. Minority Report
9. The Shining
8. Miller's Crossing
7. Aguirre
6. Zodiac
5. The Empire Strikes Back
4. Alien
3. Taxi Driver
2. The Hustler
1. Oldboy

So there's mine... I thought Zodiac was egregiously underrated, I've watched it so many times now and it just keeps getting better! Though I'm sure this list will change in a few weeks. Can't wait to see everyone else's~

Minority Report and Zodiac are SOOO underrated. I actually know a couple of people who HATED the former, when it's actually an amazing, exciting, thought-provoking peace of science fiction. Gotta agree with James' review, heh.

I could never rank my top ten favorite films, don't ask me why, it's just impossible. But, here they are:

-Goodfellas
-The Dark Knight
-Back to the Future
-Reservoir Dogs
-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
-Star Wars Episode IV
-Annie Hall
-The Big Lebowski
-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
-Raging Bull

Honorable Mentions: Aliens, WALL-E, Serenity, The Empire Strikes Back (I guess these would be numbers 10, 11, 12 and 13; coincidentally all sci-fi)

Yes! I just can't see why someone would hate Minority Report... whenever someone asks me for my favorite action movie, I always come back with that. Incredibly thrilling. I guess maybe all the silly Tom Cruise hate has tainted its memory.

Also, I'm glad we agree on which Star Wars is the best :)

funny thing you mention the Tom Cruise thing. why? because it's definitely made the biggest impact in the States. while yeah, here in Peru we DO see in cable and in the news the crazy stuff Tom does - or used to do -, we just don't care as much as some people in the States. we still see him as a star or an actor, and thus can STILL enjoy his films - nobody laughed at the trailer of Valkyre when it was shown before Benjamin Button last Monday, for example - despite his occasional wackiness.

and yeah, Empire is DEFINITELY the best Star Wars film. (although for my money, Revenge of the Sith is pretty amazing too.)

Sith better than A New Hope?

I can't explain why I like ANH better than TESB, but mostly likely that while Empire is a stronger film, New Hope is just so much fun and stuck with me so much as a kid.

I know a lot of the online hate is because he's more or less the spokesperson for a cult that costs a lot of money to be a part of. Plus he's a total freakin' nutbar, which reflects on his body of work. Just like the Mel Gibson/Michael Richards scandals.

I don't imagine your country pumps celebrity news into your home 24 hours a day, which is why the backlash against the actor might seem extreme. Each and every one of us saw that Oprah couch thing about 40 times in a week. Every station was playing it.

I feel ya... A New Hope is great fun. I may have even watched it more than Episode V.... which is weird, come to think of it. I suppose we should be starting a new thread if we're going to get into this, though! Star Wars takes up whole forums on its own :D

We have many crossover movies on our lists :-)
I also really like Fright Night
but Rent? I turned off the DVD - sorry.

Fright Night was the first horror movie my parents showed me. Well, they showed me the part where Charley stabs the vampire in the hand with a pencil. I was five. Scared the bejeesus out of me!

Rent was actually probably my worst movie theater experience. The kids sitting in the same row as me were talking throughout, making rude comments about the homosexuality in the film, complaining that the characters were singing, etc. They didn't have the courtesy to walk out (unlike with The Corpse Bride where the two teenaged girls sitting behind me complained that it was a musical and then left before the first song ended). Horrible time, yet I like the movie a lot.

Good call on 12 Angry Men. A few months ago PBS aired it. I forgot how much I love that movie. It's one of the most suspenseful movies I've seen, yet there's no action. It's all dialogue. Modern movies need to take note of how to do it right by watching that movie.

Oh, I can't believe I forgot "12 Angry Men"! That's in those honorable mentions for sure. It does nearly top my list of best screenplays ever written. It's the one movie I'm ashamed that I don't own, but now I'm holding out for it on Blu-Ray.

yeah, I get you. I KNOW about all of these stuff, I just haven't experienced it. I kinda like this because it allows me to watch these guys' movies in a more objective fashion.

I know it sounds weird, but I'm not sure. I know ANH was the original one, but since both they're written and directed by George Lucas, both of them have weird dialogue and static camerawork, so... I don't know, maybe they're both equally good? Revenge of the Sith is a little more emotionally fulfilling maybe, despite all the bad writing and maybe more because of the context of the story. (Anakin turning into Darth Vader, Palpatine obtaining power, the creation of the Empire, the exile of Obi-Wan and Yoda, etc.)

Post Re: Your Top 10 Favorite Films Are..?
Hmmm...
Like James I think that many Top Ten Lists are ridiculous, and expressing the emotions that we as individuals feel watching a specific movie is the only true way of honestly compiling top movie lists. As for mine, here we go...

Honorable mentions
Vertigo
Memento

10. Goodfellas
9. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Arthur C. Clarke is my favorite Sc-Fi writer, Kubrick's collaboration with him makes this an unforgettable film)
8. Rear Window (Tough choice between this and Vertigo, but I'll watch Rear Window more often than Vertigo)
7. The Empire Strikes Back
6. Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings Saga (Incredible accomplishment that hits the geek spot for me)
5. Amadeus (I'm studying Opera..what can I do but love this film)
4. My Fair Lady (The best Movie musical ever produced, acted, and sung)
3.The Dark Knight (A perfect synthesis of comic book and real-world reality) I love Batman, and I love the crime film genre!
2. Schindler's List (The crown of Steven Spielberg's many accomplishments)
1.The Godfather (Parts 1&2) I can watch these movies over and over and every time derive as much satisfaction as the first time I watched them

Let me reiterate that these are films that I can watch over and over deriving the same satisfaction and emotional enjoyment. However, I agree with many of the other Top Ten lists as great movies in their own right!

Love this new forum. i have a feeling that truly intelligent people are going to be the largest contributors and am looking forward to many more wonderful discussions!
