Top 20 Animated Features (Phase I: MAKE A LIST)

Post Top 20 Animated Features (Phase I: MAKE A LIST)
So I'd like to collect from you, the Reelviews Forum contributor, a list of what you believe are the greatest animated features of all time. I'll be taking those lists and entering them into a spreadsheet, weighting the results (so please number your entries), and putting up a nice dedicated thread in the Great Movies section.

So here's what you'll need to do:

1. In order of preference, #1 being the "greatest", type up a list of your choices. It doesn't matter if you pick 1, 3, 5, 10, or 75 movies. If you can only think of three that are great, put three down on the list.

2. Hit "Submit"

After that comes

3. Me weighting your choices based on, oh, all kinds of factors. We'll have to see how many participate and how many movies are on those individual lists. It'll become clear at some point.

4. Me typing up something for The Great Movies section that highlights The Top 20 Animated Features of All Time (number subject to change with notice)!

I'd like to get at least 20-30 lists so, you know, get to typin'. And until then I eagerly await some good responses.

Thanks in advance!

Love,

Me

Me again.

If you need some help with titles either due to an unreliable memory or other understandable this and thattery you should definitely check out this exhaustive list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_an ... ngth_films

It's fairly complete (at least as far as I can tell) but don't feel limited to the titles on that list.

This calls for some research....

...research done! That was fast, huh? Actually it wasn't fast at all. Here are 25 sorted according to best-est. Actually #1 is #1, while 2-25 are interchangeable. But not by you. Don't fuck with the order.

01. Iron Giant, The (1999)
02. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
03. Princess Mononoke (1997)
04. Ghost in the Shell (1995)
05. Incredibles, The (2004)
06. WALL·E (2008)
07. Ratatouille (2007)
08. South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut (1999)
09. Persepolis (2007)
10. Pinocchio (1940)
11. Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)
12. Spirited Away (2001)
13. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
14. Mary and Max (2009)
15. Castle in the Sky (1986)
16. Up (2009)
17. Lion King, The (1994)
18. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
19. Waltz with Bashir (2008)
20. Finding Nemo (2003)
21. Triplets of Belleville, The (2003)
22. Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
23. Coraline (2009)
24. Scanner Darkly, A (2006)
25. Secret of Kells, The (2009)

There. The list is skewed towards newer films because I haven't had a chance to rewatch a lot of the Disney classics. I've seen stuff like Akira too, but I could barely even tell you what that was about.

EDIT: All traces of 'THE' and 'A' moved to end of the title.

That's going to happen with everyone (good response so far, all things considered). Most people, myself included, haven't seen much pre-1970 stuff other than what Disney produced. There's a good reason for that. But, as animation has basically exploded in quality since 1980, I'm happy that people can name 20 movies. The submissions thus far have been great.

Ah yes. If they could expand those credits (with, what, 20 seconds of stand-alone animation?) to 90 minutes you'd be in business.

Bambi Meets Godzilla: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAVYYe87b9w (it's really short so be sure to check it out at least once)

The submissions thus far have also been limited. I hope you get to Phase 2. Say...would Phase 3 happen to be "PROFIT!"?

Incidentally, "Trinimackdaddy7234" sounds eerily similar to the actual screen names you find here. I wouldn't be surprised if that's already taken

I'll try to make a list by the end of the day. I'm an enormous fan of animated movies, so I'm interested in how this list turns out.

With bob harris (thanks!) and me (not quite finalized) we have an okay response, so far, given how apathetic many of the forum members are. If this ends up drying up before at least 10 people respond (not impossible) I'll still come up with something.

This sounds like fun. I will have to do some research before I post my list. I can think of plenty of films which will make the list, but ordering the top 5 or 10 will be difficult/fun.

Post Re: Top 20 Animated Features (Phase I: MAKE A LIST)
ATTENTION!

Hi. I'll step yelling.

A quick favor to ask:

If you have not yet submitted a list and plan on doing so, please remove any instances of the word THE at the front of the title (i.e., The Iron Giant should be listed as Iron Giant, The Lion King as Lion King and so forth).

Why? Because it makes it much easier on me to paste your lists into my spreadsheet and let the macro assign the appropriate number of "points" as related to your movie choice's placement on your individual list.

And how will this final 20 be put together, you ask? No magic: a simple algorithm was written that takes into account only a movie's place on a list. This rules out the possibility of a tie in any position. Your #1 is considered your #1 but your #20 (or #30 or whatever) isn't weighted so that it represents a small fraction of your #1 choice. I'm assuming that you've narrowed your choices down to 20, 25, 30 or whatever pictures and that you still really like/love the last movie on the list.

Strange that only Patrick has put down Bambi, though.

Keep 'em coming and, please, no THE at the beginning of the movie title. Thanks!

Okay, here's my list. Lamentably, out of all the animated films I've seen, I still haven't gotten around to The Iron Giant. I need to fix that in the near future.

1. Pinocchio
2. Alice In Wonderland
3. WALL-E
4. Spirited Away
5. Triplets Of Belleville
6. Yellow Submarine
7. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (Does this count? If so, cool.)
8. Incredibles
9. My Neighbor Totoro
10. Waking Life
11. Toy Story
12. Ratatouille
13. Fantastic Mr. Fox
14. Tokyo Godfathers
15. Finding Nemo
16. Coraline
17. Peter Pan
18. Princess Mononoke
19. A Scanner Darkly
20. 5 Centimeters Per Second
21. Castle In The Sky
22. Grave Of The Fireflies
23. Chicken Run
24. Allegro Non Troppo (Here's another one that I'm not sure of. It's about 75% animation, 25% live-action)
25. The Secret Of Kells
26. Monsters Inc.
27. Persepolis
28. Emperor’s New Groove
29. Akira
30. Perfect Blue
31. Nightmare Before Christmas
32. Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh

A Mr. bob harris has Who Framed Roger Rabbit? as well and I'm not opposed to it -- if there's an uproar then it can be dropped out of the list (not that, at this rate, it's going to make the top 20).

Allegro Non Troppo, however, better be fair game because it's #3 on my personal list. I think you're the only person on this forum to ever mention that movie and... man, that's pretty cool. Everyone should see it.

One more thing: at this rate it would take a small e-earthquake to knock Wall-E from its lead over everything else.
