Post Rate My Top 10 Sci-fi
Hey guys this is the list of my favourite science fiction movies and I would like to know what would your personal rating be on a scale of 10.

1.)ALIEN(1979)

2.)JURASSIC PARK(1993)

3.)VANILLA SKY(2001)

4.)BLADE RUNNER(1982)

5.)CONTACT(1997)

6.)THE TERMINATOR(1984)

7.)ALIENS((1986)

8.)GATTACA(1997)

9.)A.I(2001)

10.)A CLOCKWORK ORANGE(1971).

Hon mentions-T2(1991),Planet of the apes(1968).
2001 ASO is too complex and I will have to see it again to grasp it better

8/10

Not a big fan of Clockwork and I think Jurassic Park is a bit too high

And no Star Wars too...you call yourself a nerd?

I'd say 6/10 myself. You have the movies on there (except for Star Wars) but the order is kind of odd. Jurrassic Park would be much lower and Aliens much higher on mine.

Sorry never got into Star trek, will try it sometime though.
I know it sounds wierd but I dont consider Star wars as hardcore science fiction. It is an opera, like Harry potter in space...Its fantasy.I like it but not adore it

About Jurassic park....again I may come across as stupid but for me the expirience of watching a movie ranks really really high.Jurassic park for me was an event.I remember everything...I was an 8 year old kid obsessed with Dinos and then what I saw that night on screen, with my jaws wide open...something I will never ever forget and thats why I rank it as stevie's favorite movie.
Its the expirience...the best movie expirience I ever had till date, thats my childhood and it will always stay with me.
and cmon dont tell me you dint enjoy the theatrical expirience?
Even today the effects hold up awesome

I agree with Alien/Aliens, Terminator, Contact and Jurassic Park.
I like Gattaca but wouldn't be on my top 10 if I had one.

Are Vanilla Sky and A Clockwork Orange Sci-Fi? (it's been a while since seeing them)

Decent list. I agree with you on leaving out Star Wars. I love the original trilogy, but I wouldn't consider it 'hard' sci-fi. That said, I don't consider the Terminator films sci-fi either.

If you can stomach foreign films make sure to check out 'Abre Los Ojos' (1997). Vanilla Sky is a remake of that film and I find the original to be way better.

Give '2001' another chance...or a couple other chances. It's one of my favourites.

Some recommended viewing:
Metropolis (1927) (my avatar is a still from that film)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original)
Donnie Darko
Forbidden Planet
The Thing (Carpenter's remake)
12 Monkeys

Hey ed_metal_head,
How would you consider TI and T2 not Sci0fi??
I mean they are like the epitome of science fiction...would love to hear your argument.

About the movies you suggested..
Metropolis (1927)...I have to see this
Close Encounters of the Third Kind....Ok but thats it
The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original).....I liked it bout 7/10 though
Donnie Darko....love it although I consider it artsy cult and thats why I dint put it here
Forbidden Planet....Loved it,just misses out
12 Monkeys....Dunno how but I hated this film,I love quirky, offbeat mindbending flicks but this one never got me.I have to check out Brazil as well...you seen it?
The Thing...I love this movie and Kurt russell is one of my favourite,I love the atmosphere of the movie but maybe it just reminded me of ALIEN.Still a classic and I cant believe they are coming up with a prequel or whatever

I applaud you for not having the overratedness of Star Wars on your list.

But, at the same time, you fail for not having any Star Trek on your list.

Post Re: RATE MY TOP 10 Sci-fi
Alien, Jurassic Park, Blade Runner, Contact, T1, Aliens, and A.I. are all great. Clockwork Orange is one of the two Kubrick films I've never been able to warm up to, but it's an important and challenging film, so I can't dock you for that. Kind of hate Vanilla Sky, Gattaca is good, but any sci-fi list (or movie list in general) without 2001 can't be not lacking in my book. I'd say 7/10.

Since there's some dispute as to what constitutes "sci-fi" and what doesn't, I simply included everything on here that anyone might consider (with the exception of any and all Frankenstein and zombie films, which I think fall squarely into horror; had Night of the Living Dead been on my list, it would be #3). Also couldn't bring myself to limit it to 10, 15, or even 20, so here's a wider range of my taste. No, I haven't seen a single Star Trek film, something I'm going to correct this year when I see all of them.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. Dr. Strangelove
3. Blade Runner
4. Brazil
5. The Terminator
6. The Fly (1986)
7. A.I. Artificial Intelligence
8. The Empire Strikes Back
9. Donnie Darko
10. WALL·E
11. Jurassic Park
12. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
13. Dark City
14. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
15. The Iron Giant
16. Star Wars
17. Metropolis
18. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
19. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
20. The Matrix
21. The Thing (from Another World)
22. Aliens
23. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
24. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
25. The Invisible Man
26. War of the Worlds
27. Minority Report
28. Total Recall
29. Alien
30. Akira

Hi Rishi

Welcome to the forum!

I think your list is interesting. As always with any personal list there will be a few disagreements and suggestions. Your list seems skewed to the last thirty years.

Some of my suggestions from older times you may have seen, some are repeats:

Metropolis - amazing considering it's time
This Island Earth
The Day The Earth Stood Still (not Keanu) - i know you've seen it, but maybe it deserves a rewatch?
The Incredible Shrinking Man
Invasion of the Body Snatchers - The original
War of the Worlds - the Orson Welles radio broadcast! as well as the original
When World's Collide
Forbidden Planet
The Day The Earth Caught Fire
Them! - The exposition scenes are wonderful :-)

and

Plan 9 From Outer Space! - I'm a huge fan of this movie

Rob

I like robhumanick's list, expecially putting 2001 at the top, and including Dark City, The Matrix and Akira.

Thanks everyone for your replies and the options you suggested.
I had the matrix on my list and how did I forget to put that here..dang!
Anyways I liked dark city but I actually felt that the overall feel was very much like the matrix...maybe because they were released together but I even felt the overall atmosphere and the sets were kinda alike.

Isnt Akira an anime which will star Leo di caprio in the hollywierd adaptation???

Also another film I forgot to put down was Sodenberg's Solaris!!!
I loved the haunting feeling of the film plus the set designs rocked!
Again its a remake of a russian movie which I desperately wanna see

How could you possibly put AI on your list but leave out Minority Report? Unless you don't consider Minority Report to be Sci-Fi?

Post Re: RATE MY TOP 10 Sci-fi
Rishi, all of the movies you mentioned are good. There are certainly films I'd place higher but it's all a matter of preference.

Science Fiction is an interesting genre because to describe something as "sci-fi" gives no indication of the film's tone. It may very well be an adventure, suspense, horror, or comedy that merely incorporates science fiction elements in order to create the scenario. There are very few films which I would classify as "pure" sci-fi... that is films that are interested in exploring the ideas behind the science fiction elements. When a film does come along, that invests heavily into the idea I get very excited.

My favourite "Science Fiction" movies are:

2001 & 2010
Blade Runner
Twelve Monkeys
Gattaca
Dark City/The Matrix (take your pick)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

But I have a slew of other favourites that incorporate sci-fi elements:
Back to the Future
Star Trek
Star Wars
The Thing (1982)
Alien/Aliens
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
The Fly (1986)
E.T.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Ghostbusters
...
