Post Re: Great Movie Death Scenes
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

[Reveal] Spoiler:
In a ridiculous turn of events, a coffin with a dead body is launched onto a highway sign, and Robert Downey Jr. is tossed onto that coffin, sliding on it before catching on to the dead arm hanging out of it due to him being pursued by a gunman. As the gunman sprints towards that area, Downey Jr. notices his gun on top of the coffin, and starts shaking it. As the gun slides, the gunman gets closer. Downey Jr. catches the gun as the gunman appears over the railing, turns, and shoots him straight in the heart.

Best kill-shot ever, IMO.

Come on guys, do I have to pimp The Wizard of Oz on every thread? Surely, there are other fans of the movie here.

The Witch's death scene is easily one of the greatest and most memorable in all of cinema:
You cursed brat! Look what you've done! I'm melting! melting! Oh, what a world! What a world! Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? Oooooh, look out! I'm going! Oooooh! Ooooooh!

There was another great moment later on in this scene
[Reveal] Spoiler:
where Downey Jr. ends up on top of a car driven by one of the bad guys who tries to shoot him through the roof of the car. Downey Jr. rolls out of the way and just misses being shot and then shoots and kills the guy through the driver's side window

Good stuff!!!

Pulp Fiction

[Reveal] Spoiler:
Vincent comes out of the shitter to find Butch, gun at the ready. Their eyes lock, neither of them moves. The tension is palpable, and you can tell that each man is waiting, just waiting, for the other to make a life or death move.

Then the pop tart pops, Butch reflexively squeezes the trigger, and Vincent spends the last few seconds of his life bleeding out, back on the toilet.

Another great scene from Pulp Fiction would be
[Reveal] Spoiler:
the "accidental" shot to the head in the back seat of the car.
That was so insane and hilarious!!

The death of Duke in "Repo Man" is classic:

DUKE: Otto?
OTTO: Yeah I'm here man.
DUKE: The lights are growing dim. I know a life of crime led me to this sorry fate. And yet I I blame society. Society made me what I am.
OTTO: That's bullshit. You're a white suburban punk, just like me.
DUKE: But it still hurts.
(DUKE succumbs to his gunshot wound.)
OTTO: You're going to be all right man
(DUKE noisily gags as he chokes on the blood from his gunshot wound.)
OTTO: Maybe not.

I'll pick one each from the two ends of the spectrum:

Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove--obviously.

Saving Private Ryan -
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Adam Goldberg getting slowly stabbed to death.
The most horrific, uncomfortable moment in the movie. Incredibly powerful.

Under Seige 2
[Reveal] Spoiler:
Two henchmen stop the train. One says: Someone's been shot. The conductor says:Where? Henchmen says: Here. Then the two henchmen blast the two, foolish conductors.

Good call on Saving Private Ryan Bones. I've long since cherished that scene as one of the few fight sequences in film that actually makes you *feel* it. Violence should feel violent, something Cronenberg gets sometimes (the naked fight scene in Eastern Promises is incredible) and Spielberg got here. From the same film...

[Reveal] Spoiler:
Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan. Gets shot crossing the bridge and, dazed, starts plugging away at the German tank with his sidearm. Finally the cavalry arrives but he's almost dead, with just enough time to say an emotional but un-hokey "Earn this" to Matt Damon. I'm not a huge Hanks fan but his performance in this scene and movie are tremendous

Dammit, ya beat me to it! Easily one of my favorites...

But who can forget Platoon?!

Not to mention the bathroom scene in Full Metal Jacket...

Yep, good one. Someone has mentioned Alien but I'd also include the death of the android Ash. That character creeped me out just as much as the aliens did and I was more than happy to see him get fried after he went through that psychedelic wig-out session just prior to his death.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"

-I've already wasted my whole life. I want to tell you with my last breath that I have always loved you.

"Titanic"

[Reveal] Spoiler:
Leonardo DiCaprio dissapears like a ghost in the blackness of the ocean.

"Lolita"

-That hurt!
IMHO, Quilty's death is the first sign that Stanley Kubrick was much more than a good director.

I'm not a huge Kubrick-aficionado, but the battle scene in Paths of Glory proved he was more than a good director. Lolita's a good film though.

By the way if this hasn't been said yet...the ending of Scarface absolutely deserves mention. It's almost a cliche now, but it's a masterfully over the top sequence. "I'm still standing!"
