Good call. The credit is almost entirely given to Peter Jackson but, somewhere at the core, is a script. I think they hit their peak with King Kong -- not too bad as that was the last-released film they scripted together. But, to avoid a barrage of Lord of the Rings-defending retorts, they have obviously known how to manage the smallest details right down to the very essence. Cool. They make Great Big Movies that are really Tiny Little Movies at their heart. Really cool. Now... if they would, for their next trick, script something that didn't require 15,234,223,554 special effects shots I'd be thrilled.

Well, they've got the upcoming Lovely Bones. I've never read the book, so I'm not sure exactly how effects-heavy the film will (or should) be.

Of course it goes without saying: Scorsese and Schrader.
Jonze and Kaufman
Haggis and Eastwood.

A few others:

Ang Lee and James Shamus
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland

Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo - as well as collaborating on two superb and one good Godfather screenplays, Puzo was also one of the credited writers of the flawed-but-fun Cotton Club (though given the 'story by' credit, I'm not sure how much of his writing actually ended up in the movie).
