Best Picture winner at the 1943 Oscar ceremony.

My mother is 84 in August and this is her favorite film of all time. She always tells me that it was different seeing it in 1942 in the context of the time versus on a DVD today. She is wise, for sure.

It's worth considering that unless you are 68 you almost certainly never saw it on original release

I've never seen this, but I always thought it was a soap opera. Glad to see that it has more substance than I thought.

You can tell this while watching it. Much different viewing the movie with knowledge of how the war turned out than during its original release, when nothing was certain.

The sequel was a major disappointment, and shows the importance of contributions by Wyler and the writers.

Teresa Wright's three Oscar nominations were for her first three films. She's the only person ever to do that. She could easily have received one for her fourth film, Shadow of a Doubt, and maybe her sixth, The Best Years of Our Lives. She's really wonderful here. I really like that first conversation between Carol and Vin, but I generally like the way the film handles their romance.

Thanks for the recommendation. I hadn't seen this one before and it deserves the rating. Of its opposition, I've seen Yankee Doodle Dandy seven or eight times and always like it, and The Magnificent Ambersons has the famous problems with studio interference but is a very good film. Those would seem to be the main opponents; Random Harvest is a popular romance but is really pretty silly; Carol Burnett had fun parodying it.
