Re: DANGEROUS LIAISONS (1988)
Well done again, James. Malkovich's "It's beyond my control" monologue
(and death, along with Glenn Close's comeuppance)
still resonates with me to this day. When I first saw it, at age 19, it was in the wake of "Cruel Intentions" which, contrary to your review, I thoroughly enjoyed at the time. (And it DID bring Reese Witherspoon to my attention.) Needless to say I was stunned by just how superior "Liaisons" was.
I also thought Uma Thurman was just fine, though I'd agree with you about Reeves.
Trivia, as well: Swoosie Kurtz later appeared in the opening scenes of "Cruel Intentions" as Ryan Philippe's psychiatrist. (Funnily enough, they tried a similar trick that year with Faye Dunaway in "The Thomas Crown Affair '99", which I believe was better than you made it out to be as well, James.)
