 Re: BEASTLY
Stephanie Meyers should have been aborted before birth so that her insipid high-school-style writings couldn't contaminate current film culture. Damn her to hell forever.

 Re: BEASTLY
Penny Arcade had a good take on this film the other day: Comic: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/2/28/Quote from Tycho remarking on the trailer: This "monster" looks like a fairly regular person out of BMEZine, frankly. I don't have an opinion on that continuum of human experience, other than to say that their B is their property and they can M it if they want to, what I'm saying is that the "beast" in this movie only nominally represents something undesirable, and independent of the narrative's candy shell you would have no idea that that this intense fellow was meant to be loathsome as opposed to an eminently desirable frontman astride some gloomwrought fork of Mausoleum Rock.

 Re: BEASTLY
I guess there's not much hope for that "Red Riding Hood" movie featuring Amanda Seyfried since it was made by "Twilight" director Stephanie Hardwicke. I mean if "Beastly" felt like a "Twlight" movie then "Red Riding Hood" will definately feel the same.

 Re: BEASTLY
For what it's worth, I do think Vanessa Hudgens is a talented actress, she just gets typecasted in thin nondemanding in films like this, i'm very eager to see how her performance is in Sucker Punch. Also I agree about Red Riding Hood, I saw a trailer for that film(which looks awfully similar to Wolfman) and I actually think it looks even worse then this film!

 Re: BEASTLY
I was wondering this as well, especially since there isn't a review scheduled for Rango, the new Johnny Depp-Gore Verbinski animated film. That one seems like it would generate more traffic to the site, and it has been received warmly from critics (83% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 19% for Beastly).

 Re: BEASTLY
It has to do with the availability and convenience of screenings. I'll likely see RANGO this weekend. Can't say whether or not I'll review it.

 Re: BEASTLY
Here I thought you just became a masochist with Beastly following on the heels of I Am Number Four. Or that you were just trying to shore up the 14 year old girl demographic.

 Re: BEASTLY
Steady on eh? The Disney 'Beauty and the Beast' was always one of my favourites, purely because of the entire concept behind it. It was a well made light soup compared to the sledge hammer to the face that was the message behind Shrek. As a consequence, I can see myself at least giving this a try when it becomes an affordable pursuit. My only regret is that nobody can stand in for the original Gaston. As for the Myers comparison... Star Wars anyone? Also sorry to pick the peanuts but skinhead + tattoos doesn't = emo. Just look at Jared Leto (no I can't spell it and no I won't look it up).

 Re: BEASTLY
Maybe not in general, but in this movie it certainly does. Also, another point... When I refer to something being "TWILIGHT-ized," I don't mean that the movie necessarily resembles TWILIGHT. What TWILIGHT does, however, is to infantilize and romanticize ideas/stories/concepts that previously had an edge (sometimes a quite dark one). In the Stephanie Meyers books, it takes one of the most dreaded monsters in recent human history and turns it into a wimpy, moody Harlequin hero. So when I refer to a movie being crossed with TWILIGHT, I'm thinking of something that was once more interesting/daring/edgy having been stripped of anything remotely controversial and/or mature and infused with an inherent desire to appeal to less sophisticated viewers.

 Re: BEASTLY
Okay well I'll have to see what you mean! Sure, I agree completely and I've heard nonstop rants from my girlfriend about the whole 'sparkling in daylight' thing to the point where I daren't mention the series at all! I just think that if people will insist on calling Star Wars 'sci-fi' then it's fair to say that it is 'Twilight-ized' Sci-Fi.

 Re: BEASTLY
Her vampires were moody and subject to self-loathing, but they were nowhere near as de-fanged as in TWILIGHT and its sequels.

 Re: BEASTLY
Not really no. People are basing this whole 'de-fanging- concept on the idea of a lone literary figure somehow being the absolute milestone. The ideas of vampires being little more than beasts and also being potentially romanticised figures both have equal standing in their respective canon. My only experience with Myers work is, going on JB's own advice, simply picking up the book and reading one or two pages so I cannot really comment. However I will say that her ideas are by no means new OR unique and consequently I do not hold he personally responsible.
