For all to chuckle at...

culled from http://bit.ly/djM69c

Hollywood News: Why did you take a role in Piranha 3-D? Was that a tribute to Jaws?

Dreyfuss: I had said no because I didn’t want to make fun of my own career. I was on the phone with Bob Weinstein and he said, “We can give you a lot more money,” and I told him what I was involved in. I was describing to him this [idea of] bringing civics back, so that people understood their own civic authority. Because if we’re bound only by ideas and don’t teach them, we’re not bound. And, he interrupted and said, “If it hadn’t already been written, I would have said, ‘You had me at civics.’” He wrote a check that was this big to the Initiative, and I said, “Okay, I’ll do the film.” And their names are going to be on the bottom of the website, permanently.

Hollywood News: Who do you play in the film?

Dreyfuss: I play Matt Hooper. I play the older Matt Hooper, who escaped being eaten by the shark and is now eaten by a bunch of piranha fish.

Hollywood News: Was it an opportunity for you to bring some gravitas to something that might otherwise be superficial fun?

Dreyfuss: No, it was an opportunity to get money into the Initiative.

Okay, potential spoilers ahoy here:

[Reveal] Spoiler:
My problem with Piranha 3D is that the humans are made to be the heroes of the story. The fish are the heroes! I don't care about the humans!

Too much attention is given to those little kids...I want to see the kids get eaten. When they're dragging the stripper through the water, I want to see her come up with fish hanging off of her titties om nom nomming. We didn't get to see Ving Rhames ham it up enough. And for a movie that is in 3D, we needed to see more jiggly 3D titties bouncing all over the screen.

As one who has seen many, many exploitation films, I know.

Yawn. Another example of why 2010 has been a piss-poor year for films so far. I wonder, JB: would you have given this film 3 stars in 2008?

I haven't seen this one yet, as I had planned on giving this a wide berth. As much as I like Alexandre Aja's work, I'm frankly tired of both horror remakes and 3-D movies (and combinations thereof), and I wasn't at all surprised when it originally appeared as though JB would also be avoiding this film as well.

Imagine my surprise upon finding that JB not only saw the film but also rated it three stars! After reading your review, James, I may have to give this movie a looksee myself after all.

And it's nice to hear that Aja retained the nudge/wink tone that was so prevalent with Joe Dante's in-joke-filled original.

The film does manage to do exploitation effectively, for sure. I found it hilarious that the underwater "ballet" scene is rather similar, though more explicit, to a scene in the 1934 Tarzan and His Mate, when Maureen O'Hara (or her body double) flounced around underwater with a more-clothed Tarzan - they even did a barrel roll like the Wild Wild Girls in Piranha 3D. Good times recalling nudity from 76 year old nearly Code-era films!

Not that surprising since it holds a solid rating on RT. I think I was more surprised when the reviews started appearing and they were mostly positive.

I would rate it similar to James, a low three stars. Its fun, gory and ultimately forgettable and doesn't outstay its welcome.

As for this summer of movies, it started out poorly but by the end it had a few very solid titles, some decent fare and a heap of dreck - so pretty much just like every other year.

Saw this last night, my second 3D feature ever (first was Avatar).

Not a great film from a dramatic standpoint, the few jokes there were weren't even that funny.

However, it more than made up in entertainment value. EXTREMELY bloody, nice scenery, gorgeous girls, and an underwater ballet that was alone worth the price of admission. The 3D aspect made it fun for me though I don't know if I'll feel the same once I see it again on TV.

Oh, and the tequila scene was, well, awesome ;-)

EDIT: I just realized Shrunkenhead was more on the ball than I was with my post. Oh well, here's the IGN link if anyone's interested:

Here's a recent article in IGN.com that I stumbled across about a war of words between James Cameron and the makers of Piranha 3D.

It sounds to me like Mark Canton was a bit on the defensive side with his long-winded reply.

'Piranha 3DD' released on Friday in a few theaters & On Demand, with very little marketing. Wonder if James will give it a shot(only 7.99 on Time Warner)

Quote:
Elsewhere, the Weinstein Company quietly unspooled "Piranha 3DD" at 86 locations and day-and-date via VOD this frame for a three-day total of $179,000.

"Theatrical's only one piece of the puzzle," said Erik Lomis, head of distribution at TWC. "We didn't do that well theatrically, and I don't think we were expecting to do that well." "Piranha" is the first title from the company's Radius TWC banner, founded to foster modest distributions for low budget features in select markets and nationally via VOD. This model allows these films to receive a theatrical release in some areas, but more importantly to the shingle, become available for home viewers across the country to access, and in this case, in full 3D if viewers own the proper equipment.

Though exact VOD numbers were not readily available, Lomis said early indicators for the film are very encouraging. Lomis wouldn't disclose "Piranha's" P&A spend except to say that it was "significantly less" than that of a major theatrical release.

If I'm going to pay $8 to watch something at home, I want to see a story-based movie, not something like this. So, no, I'm not planning to see this. The first time was fun. This is depressing.

I think it looks like fun, but I don't have cable and I don't feel like paying to see this in theaters, so i'll wait til it hits DVD before checking it out.

P.S. I'm guessing you're not planning on seeing Get The Gringo either?
