Jonah Hill, after having pushed the envelope and shown some acting ability in Moneyball, has fallen back into his typecast role as the socially awkward outsider.

I thought that was Moneyball... ;)

So I've heard Johnny Depp has a cameo in this film. Assuming this is true, is his moment any good?

Well IMDB details his "moment" under the trivia spoilers section if you're curious.

[Reveal] Spoiler:
I thought it was one of the best moments in the film. Very irreverent.

Just saw this, and next to the Mission Impossible films, this is by far the best TV adaption i've seen, it was an absolute laugh riot from beginnning to end, it's tough to pick the funniest scene, though Captain Dickson's speech got huge laughs form the audience, as did the scene where
[Reveal] Spoiler:
the coach gets his dick shot off and he actually tries to pick it up with his teeth
I didn't see the profanity as "juvenile" at all, to me it would've looked more ridiculous if there wasn't swearing. Depp's cameo was pretty clever as well.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that they created a more comedic movie from a TV series that was largely dramatic? Apart from the basic premise, I don't think I'd think the 2 items were at all related if I didn't know better. :?

I don't think it's odd at all, I think it's genius, IMO trying to do a "straight" adaption of the show wouldn't have worked nearly as well.

Just came back from seeing this....it is overlong, it is crude but dammit it was hilarious and fun. It was so nice to see a Jonah Hill movie without any Jonah Hill-isms and Channing Tatum do something good other than impersonate John Cena.

It's been a good year for Channing Tatum. He was actually quite good in Steven Soderbergh's Haywire and he's really good here too. He and Jonah Hill really do make for a great team. The movie is very funny but it's also has heart as it has themes about friendship and about popularity and how both Tatum and Hill basically have swapped places from their high school with Hill being the popular one and Tatum not.

One scene I really loved was the big car chase with has a very funny running gag where they keep expecting some car crashes to explode and it doesn't.

That was a great moment. In general I enjoyed the satire and send-up of movie conventions in this film. Definitely a three-star film at least.

I LOVED this movie! The trailers don't do it justice AT ALL!

I love how it kept sending up the cop movie and buddy movie genres. Like how Jenko thinks he knows all the rules about being popular (by not caring about anything) and ends up having it blow up in his face, or the first arrest when it mimics the high powered arrest scenes in cop movies then reveals them to be on bikes. Great stuff. 3.5/4

I might be over-analyzing, but I think the writers are making a statement about the stupid state of marijuana criminalization in the US.

The saddest one relates to Eric.

[Reveal] Spoiler:
He was caught smoking weed by the coach, who then forced him to sell harder drugs, and eventually got involved in the whole criminal enterprise. One of his strongest motivations is to NOT go to jail, but the things he do in order not to get there eventually lands him there.

If smoking weed is decriminalized, Eric might not have ended where he was at the end of the movie.

Oh, BTW, the movie is hilarious and the running gag of non-explosion seems more like toying with viewers expectations than a potshot at Michael Bay.

Interesting, I didn't even think of that.
