And the definite exception of 'Sucker Punch'.

Not definite, I thought it was ugly both outside and in.

Star Wars didn't need to be believable to be enjoyed. It's pretty much a given that anything can happen, thus the reason it fits more neatly into 'Fantasy' than 'Sci-fi'. The Alien movies were a little harder to swallow admittedly however there was nothing THAT out of the realm of possibility; Faux humans is way out there with Elvish alcohol resistance but other than that, meeting a new species of creature that doesn't conform to anything we know about is pretty acceptable.

I don't think Melancholia needs to be scientifically believable to be enjoyed. The planet is clearly a metaphor above anything else.

Nice to see a fellow limey on here though. That is what we're still called I think.

Criticizing the planet hitting Earth in "Melancholia" is like criticizing the raining frogs in "Magnolia."

Also, as other commenters have insinuated, I highly doubt you (JB) were this literal minded about the science in every other comparable film you've reviewed.

Furthermore, you claim Von Trier didn't care enough to change the science. What an incredible assumption on your part. If the director was using the planet as a MacGuffin or metaphor, wouldn't it be better to say you disliked his intentions? Comments like that make one wonder if you have something against the director.

Just wanted to add: I think "Drive" is one of the most beautiful films of the year, though in a more modest way. Out of all the films that pay homage to the films of the 80's, "Drive" is the only film that approximates the 80's look with its burnished, crepuscular cinematography.

I've yet to see it but it does sound like this is the case. It's not intended to be a disaster movie, right?

I was about to ask how you know where I'm from, until I remembered it says on the left hand side of the box... I've forgotten what I even wrote over there!

Saw this a couple of days ago and can't believe the main subject of discussion has been the science and inaccuracy of a rogue planet heading toward Earth. Its like calling Back to the Future, Sunshine or Jurassic Park bad movies purely on the science (2 of those have narrative issues). In Melancholia it is just a plot device that worked fine for me and believable enough from the brief description the film gives. It also helps for an amazing visual and aural experience. The characters are clearly the major focus here.

Now if someone said they didn’t like the narrative of Melancholia, that I could accept. Personally I thought it was outstanding and like anything von Trier not for everyone, I feel it works even better as a film if you’ve battled depression at some point.

Just saw this on Netflix streaming. I thought it was one of the best films I've seen in the past year. Gorgeous photography, wonderful score, great acting (I didn't know that Kirsten Dunst had it in her). The ending was very moving. Also, it has one of the best depictions of clinical depression I've ever seen; if you have any experience with this disease, either personally or academically, you'll appreciate it.

For me, the debate about the scientific accuracy of the movie is irrelevant. I hate bad science in science fiction movies, but in this film it's clear that the planet is supernatural, or a metaphor, take your pick. Maybe it's God, or another universe. In the end, it didn't really matter.
