Nice review. I saw this a couple weeks back at an advanced screening. It's my favorite film so far this year, although that's not saying a whole lot. Definitely not perfect, but it's thoroughly entertaining and actually has some interesting ideas and substance beneath the main thriller narrative. Absolutely worth making a trip to see in the theaters.

Just don't go in expecting something on the same level as Moon. The two films do share thematic similarities, but this is a much more mainstream effort, more Tony Scott's Deja Vu than Solaris and Silent Running.

James' positive review and Blondie's comments are enough to get me into the theater this weekend to see this.

Mr. Almond - was it you who said Duncan Jones was more or less a director for hire on this one? If so, it's at least somewhat promising to hear he made a good film (hopefully I agree with that) with material he wasn't passionate about. If this one is good, I'll be even more excited for his next one.

Yeah, I think Jones came onto the project fairly late (not 100% sure on that). With Moon, Jones was the big creative voice behind the story. Not so with Source Code, but he was enthusiastic enough about the script to direct it himself. If the film is a success, Jones hopes to pursue more of his own story ideas, only with much larger budgets.

He was there for a Q&A session after the Phoenix screening ended, and someone asked about the possibility of him directing a film version of Ender's Game. He kind of quietly shot that down, saying that he is much more interested in developing his own material.

I just read/saw a video where they mention a VERY cool cameo in the movie.

[Reveal] Spoiler:
Apparently Scott Bakula has a cameo and even says his famous "oh boy" line from Quantum Leap.

Although I've ALWAYS been excited about this movie, I have to admit, that makes me want to see it even more now! 8-)

Unfortunately he doesn't have any screentime; it's only a voice cameo. There is definitely a strong debt owed to Quantum Leap in the narrative though.

^ I agree with the enthusiasm. I really enjoyed Moon and am interested to see what Mr. Jones has done here, even if he didn't write the thing. This is probably the first 2011 release that I'm actually interested in.

It's a fascinating and atypical choice for a major studio release and indicates that even in this era of cookie-cutter plots and braindead spectacles, filmmakers with original ideas and visions continue to toil.

...And should therefore be rewarded with ticket sales. I'll be going to see this, even if there are logic holes.

Mark Kermode in the UK really liked it.

Combines great smarts with a very cool story and nice FX. Inception influenced.

His POV was that Inception let the studios know that smart science fiction could work and that all films do not need to be dumbed down.

He referenced many films as influences but Inception as the over riding reason that smart science fiction (versus lobotomized transformer movies) could now get financed. i think this is reasonable.

Inception's not really very "smart" when you get right down to it, a smart film wouldn't resort to having Ellen Page do nothing but spout exposition.

Hi there Sexy Vexy
You can make this case , but I think most people would agree that Inception is smarter than most movies today

Does Inception cease to be smart just because Ellen Page isn't given much to do?

Shit, Inception's smart for the being the only film I've ever seen to use slow motion as a real storytelling element rather than just a cool technique. Is it the smartest blockbuster ever? Certainly not. Then again, I'm not sure what is.

I saw Source Code today and it was good. Parts of it feel really stupid, mostly when Jake Gyllenhaal is trying to figure out how to interrogate the passengers on the train. Also, Russell Peters's cameo was a little forced in the beginning. The beginning in general seemed weak. The ending's kind of meh, too. Jeez, all these faults and I'm still giving it a B+. Hey, when Source Code was on its A game (unlike the fucking Giants tonight and last night), it was compelling. Farmiga's great. It's a comedown from Moon, but I love that movie. How could it not be a comedown?
