The Sweetest Thing was an extremely mediocre movie. The leads were likeable but the rest of the movie was extremely meh.

Bridesmaids, on the other hand, was great. One of my favorite movies from last year.

Do you have plans to see this film?

Probably. But I'm not going to go out of my way to see it. I'm not going to spend to extra money on a train ride to and from center city Philly. That would cost me 11 bucks more than the ticket itself. But if it comes out to my local Regal Cinemas I'll check it out. I think the movie is available to view online so I might check it out that way as well.

It doesn't look very good, although I never would guessed it for a zero star movie either. Based on the trailer, it looks like a 2 star movie. Which would be the same as The Sweetest Thing, actually.

If James died and went to hell I guess these would be the movies found at the local multiplex.

Freddy Got Fingered
Bachelorette
Dumb and Dumberer
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
The Pest
Feast
Captivity
The Mangler
Adrenalin: Fear The Rush

There's also Ernest Rides Again and Children Of The Corn 2.

I wish I had had seen Bridesmaids now, because it might give a better reference point on whether I would find this movie anything. I thought the first 5 minutes of Get Him to the Greek was comic genius, but the rest of the film very mediocre. The Hangover did very little for me. I hate pretty much all Adam Sandler's comedic offerings. The first American Pie film I liked, but thought the sequels were lame. Like I said, comedy is just so subjective. Think I will avoid Bachelorette at his stage, and wait for solid word of mouth or something.

I only have one quibble here:

Quote:
Hannibal Lecter would applaud with approval.

Sorry, James, but Hannibal Lecter had class and a sense of taste which was often the motivation for the things he did. Case in point: the murder of a flutist in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra who too frequently hit wrong notes during performances. After seeing an abomination like this, he'd most certainly have been getting his fava beans and chianti ready.

This is just nipicking on my part, but am I the only who preferred it when James actually typed out Zero Stars or No Stars, rather than just showing it the stars un-shaded?

It's on VOD for $10 a pop, if you really want to see it. I don't believe any Regal cinemas will be showing it since they generally avoid stuff that's available on pay TV. Come to think of it, I'm not sure where this will play. Landmark often shows films that are available in VOD but this is definitely not a Landmark kind of movie.

Don't mince words, did you like it or not?

I usually like Isla Fisher and Kirsten Dunst, so making a terrible film with them is an achievement of sorts.

I was rather surprised to see an extremely rare zero star on Berardinelli's site. Maybe there should be a betting pool to guess when the next one will come.

Well for Fischer most critics(including JB) hated Confessions Of A Shopaholic(She also had a small role in Scooby Doo), I myself found it forgettable fluff, and I don't agree with JB that it should've been post-poned because of the economy. My first exposure to Fischer was in the underrated German slasher film-"The Pool"

For me her worst film was Burke And Hare, a truly massive fall from grace for John Landis. Her next film "Now You See Me" (about a group of illusionists that rob banks) has quite the impressive cast with Jesse Eisenburg, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo and Woody Harrelson.

Also she was born in Oman, some middle-eastern country that i've never ever heard of until now.

This movie is sitting at a mediocre 62% on Rotten Tomatoes right now, but I agree with both Mr. Berardinelli and Richard Roeper on this one. It is without a doubt one of the worst films of the year. Surprised that he hated it this much, though.

I often divide films into five separate categories: godawful films, bad films, mediocre films, good films, and great films. I rarely designate movies using the second or third descriptors. Usually, I either love a movie or I hate it. "Bachelorette" easily falls into that latter half. What a shame. I, too, review entertainment for a living. The more I watch independent films, the more my disdain for mainstream fare grows. "Bachelorette" forced me to renounce some of my faith in limited releases, which I usually have higher hopes for, even though I understand that they are not always good films.

That being said, this has been a summer of disappointments. "Dark Shadows", "Men in Black III", "Snow White and the Huntsman", "Prometheus", "Rock of Ages", "Brave", "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter", "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World", "People Like Us", "The Amazing Spider-Man", "Savages", "The Watch", "Total Recall", "The Bourne Legacy", "The Campaign", "The Expendables 2", "Premium Rush", and "Lawless" all felt flat in my opinion. After first seeing them, I loved both "Prometheus" and "Spider-Man", but when reviewing them, I realized just how little I enjoyed either film, especially "The Amazing Spider-Man", which doesn't fall into the same category of bad comic-book storytelling as "Green Lantern" or "Jonah Hex", but easily belongs to the same group of superhero movies as "Hulk", "Superman Returns", and "Iron Man 2", all of which I hated with a passion, but didn't think deserved to be in the same ranks as the worst motion pictures of the genre.

Well, at least we got "Marvel's The Avengers", "The Dark Knight Rises", a few unexpected surprises, and several indie hits. That's about it. Let the fall movie season begin.

I'd put 'Iron Man 2' joint second after 'Avengers' with 'Thor' (in that series of movies so far). As for Vampire Hunter, not seen it yet but I can't believe it can be as bad as I've heard people say...

It's been a long time since I've seen a zero-star rating from JB. I remember Freddie Got Fingered, but that was a few years ago. Does anyone remember more recent candidates for infamy?

Most recent one seems to be Captivity.

And also Feast from the same year.

Feast came out the previous year actually; Captivity was his last one and while I didn't think it was any good, I certainly didn't think it was nearly as bad as James made it out to be.

Agreed, I found Captivity pretty enjoyable overall, I also didn't think Ghost In The Machine, Knock Off and Halloween 6 were deserving of 0 stars.

The question for me is: yes, the protagonists may be vile, but are they treated in such a context where the filmmakers acknowledge their amoral behavior? There are plenty of instances in media where we are given unsympathetic or sociopathic lead characters, such as"Seinfeld" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," and it's worked to great comedic effect.

On the other hand, the makers of, say, Friends or How I Met Your Mother have never acknowledged the fact that the lead characters are all a bunch of shallow yuppies. :P
