And the murders are grimly horrible. Done in such a way sthat you're aware a human life is being extinguished rather than just some shit happening on screen.

It really is. It's Exhibit A for me when people are like "DURRR SPIELBERG IS MELODRAMATIC/MANIPULATIVE/SENTIMENTAL!" He makes all kinds of films, and this one's an unsparing one.

Well, it's the exception to the rule for his 'serious' films. :|

I need to rewatch Munich. I saw it a loooong time ago, and remember liking it, but I really don't remember anything about it.

I really enjoyed Munich except for the ending, which felt like a major miscalculation that didn't fit in with the rest of the film at all.

Film: Patton
Competitor: KWRoss
Score: 4/4

I felt several similarities between this film and Lawrence of Arabia. Both are personal stories told on an epic scale about flamboyant men whose main enemies were not their military opponents, but their own personalities. As has been said many times before, George C. Scott's performance as Patton is nothing short of incredible. He embodies the character, showing us all sides of Patton. The direction and production design are impeccable, as evidenced by the very well-choreographed, well-shot battle sequences. Great shot composition and photography throughout. I'll admit, I had reservations going into this movie, (as I often do with biopics) but it quickly won me over. It was entirely gripping, and I imagine I'll be returning to it many times.

Film: Once Were Warriors
Competitor: nitrium
Score: 3.5/4

I had never heard of this film before nitrium suggested it to me, and I'm very glad he did. Once Were Warriors is a powerful story about domestic and alcohol abuse that slowly builds to a emotionally devastating climax. The anger Temuera Morrison portrays as the abusive father and the raw emotion Rena Owen portrays as the mother are both astonishing. Anyone looking for a strong female character will find one in Owen's performance here. This film is a brutal, harrowing watch, but it is well worth it.

MGames is Something Wild the '61 film with Carroll Baker and Ralph Meeker or the '86 film with Jeff Daniels, Melanie Griffith, and Liotta?

Film: Do the Right Thing
Competitor: Jeff Wilder
Score: 4/4

First of all, what a travesty that this failed to get recognition from the Academy. Thankfully history has recognized this as the far superior film to Driving Miss Daisy. This movie has a firm spot in my all-time Top 20, possibly my Top 10. Every face of this film is incredibly well-done, and I think Spike Lee's direction ties it all together. The photography is excellent. So many shots are absolutely amazing, and they are all very well-constructed. The editing is excellent and the soundtrack does an incredible job of reflecting the situations. Great performances are everywhere in this movie, particularly the performances of Danny Aiello as pizzeria-owner Sal, John Turturro as his racist son Pino, and Spike Lee's lead performance as Mookie. The casting is excellent, each actor seems perfect for their particular character. The movie does a fantastic job of staying unbiased and unsentimental. It's never clear who exactly did the right thing or whose fault the violence is. The ambiguity carries through until the credits, with conflicting quotes about violence from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X. This film is an extraordinary achievement, and the best I've seen for this competition so far. I don't expect it to be topped either.

Crap. That's what I was afraid of. Very worthy film though. So.... what happens if we have multiple people with three 4-star movies at the end? Do we go into sudden-death overtime? Or does the tie go to the person with the best overall film?

I originally said that the person with the best overall film would be the winner, but I've been thinking that an extra one-movie round would be good. Anybody tied at the top would recommend one more movie for me to watch and I would pick the best among those.

Film: Dreamscape
Competitor: MGamesCook
Score: 3/4

In this film, Dennis Quaid plays a psychic involved in a government dream-sharing program. The dream sequences are generally imaginative and exciting, but the political plotline is a little bit bland. Quaid does a decent job in the lead role due to to his charm. This is a good bit of fun, and probably worth watching once if you can get past all the ridiculous 80sness, especially in the climactic dream sequence.

I need to give Do the Right Thing a serious rewatch. I saw it a long time ago and I remember being so pissed at Mookie and the ending that I hated the film.

The movie doesn't explicitly state this, but the way I view the situation is that Mookie throwing the garbage can re-directs everyone's anger from the pizzeria owners to a piece of property. Hence the resulting riot leaving a burnt-down building, but no more lives lost.

Film: Kind Hearts and Coronets
Competitor: MunichMan
Score: 3.5/4

Kind Hearts and Coronets is an immensely satisfying movie. The droll, dry humor is as our protagonist Louis kills eight dukes in the way of his birthright is superb. Alec Guinness plays all eight of these dukes, and he's fantastic. As Peng noted in his thread, I wouldn't have even noticed that all the dukes were played by Guinness if I hadn't been informed before seeing this. Dennis Price is priceless as the lead. The film concentrates on how unique he is rather than the details of the deaths, which keeps the deaths from being amusing rather than horrifying. This movie is a really fun experience, and it makes me want to check out more Ealing comedies in the future.

Film: Z

Score 3.5/4

This French political thriller about an assassination and the ensuing investigation is very skillfully made. The tightly constructed screenplay results in a suspenseful experience throughout the entirety of the film. The action sequences surrounding the assassination are excellent, and the dizzying search to get to the bottom of it is even more exciting. I was elated to see that this won the Academy Award for Best Editing, because it's brilliant. The film frequently flashes back to the assassination to show new pieces of evidence, and it is elegantly done. There's also a good amount of political depth to this movie, which is welcome. And now I understand where lithe and fierce as a tiger comes from! A very good film.

Ooo hope you like it. Incidentally my parents watched it yesterday and to my pleasant surprise (because they are pretty conventional movie-goers and I have no idea how they will receive the operatic singing) they both love it. My dad loves to fall asleep in the middle of a movie but he watched this all the way through, saying that the set design and direction alone make him stay awake enough.
