Good on H.I. and Thief's replacement. Kunz, I saw Pan's Labyrinth for the first time about a month ago so I'll need a replacement.

In that case, They Shoot Horses Don't They (1969)

That will do just fine.

How about this? I'll watch Read My Lips, you watch Tell No One, and we'll exchange thoughts?

Okay. Tell No One streams on Netflix and isn't the Italian gay/lesbian film.

Can't wait to see what happens. I feel pretty confident, but Jeff might be my stiffest competition with BOOGIE NIGHTS and DO THE RIGHT THING in there.

Film: Speed
Competitor: Peng
Rating: 3.5/4

Accomplished cinematographer Jan de Bont brings us a ridiculously fun action thriller. Speed is intensely thrilling from start to finish, there's hardly a dull moment for the entire runtime. Bullock's charisma is a nice to counterweight to Keanu's blank acting, although this is probably the best performance I've seen Keanu give. He's a great fit for the role. My largest complaint would be that the closing subway sequence doesn't reach the dizzying highs of the elevator and bus sequences, but it's still great in it's own right. A typical complaint for me with action films is that they overstay their welcomes, but at under two hours Speed doesn't come close to doing that. Great fun. I loved it.

Standings
1)Peng 3.5

Next up: Thief12's A Streetcar Named Desire

That's a stupid, BUT fun scene. I saw this film in theaters back in the day, and everybody was laughing and clapping at that. Even now, I always LOL at that scene, but I'm not bothered at all by it. If anything, I'm more bothered by the last 20-30 minutes after they get out of the bus, cause that's when I feel that the filmmakers shoot themselves in the foot.

Agreed Thief. It's dumb, but it's hilarious and fun. I wish blockbusters would start to be willing to just have fun again like this movie. I've had just about enough of self-seriousness in summer blockbusters.

1. Munich - a revenge film, but with all of Spielberg's flair and flourishes

2. The Road to Perdition - a beautifully shot and acted look at mobster life

3. Slap Shot - just because

... Oh shit, missed the boat

It's also his only completely unsentimental film since becoming a parent. :P

Film: A Streetcar Named Desire
Competitor: Thief12
Score: 3.5/4

First and foremost, A Streetcar Named Desire is a triumph of acting. There are great performances from the whole cast, but the performances of Vivian Leigh and Marlon Brando deserve special recognition. Brando's performance is entirely gripping, and he brings a lot of range to the role. Leigh's performance reminded me quite a bit of Cate Blanchett's turn in last year's Blue Jasmine. Both are excellent, unreserved performances. This film is a hell of a lot darker than anything else from 1951, I'm sure. It's willingness to probe the darker parts of its characters psyches is much appreciated. Technically well done as well, particularly the shadowy lighting emphasizing the film's mood throughout.

Standings
1) Peng 3.5
1) Thief12 3.5

Next up: Vexer's Resident Evil
