Post Steven blatantly rips off Peng's movie competition!
So Peng's movie competition seemed like a great, fun way to get good recs. I'd like to do something similar. But since I'm still such a film novice, there are no rules for recommendations in my competition. Otherwise, it's quite similar. You recommend movies, I write them up and score them, whoever has the highest compiled score wins. I think I'll ask for three recs per person. I'm not quite as ambitious as Peng. If there happens to be a tie in the scoring, whoever recommended my favorite movie between the two people wins. Just about anything can be recommended since I've hardly seen anything, so give me your all-time favorites! I look forward to it.

Excellent idea. I'll mix things up a bit for ya.

1. City of God (to date, my favorite foreign movie of all time)
2. Dark City (if you don't love this, I will punch you)
3. Patton (you gotta see JB's all-time favorite at some point, after all)

I've been meaning to check this one out for a while. Dystopian sci-fi, noir, Big Ideas. Seems like my type of movie.

Three very random recommendations...

1. The Usual Suspects
2. On the Waterfront
3. The Thing (1982)

Three GENUINE quintessential New Zealand movies (that are actually about NZers as opposed to hobbits):
1. In my Father's Den
2. Once Were Warriors
3. Heavenly Creatures

Three that I like a great deal.

1: Drugstore Cowboy (My favorite Gus Van Sant film)
2: Children Of Men (One of the best recent sci-fi films)
3: Do The Right Thing (gotta get one of my top ten of all-time on here)

a few alternates

Boogie Nights
Thank You For Smoking
The Ice Storm

Empire of the Sun (Spielberg, 1987)
Underappreciated Spielberg effort about a British child surviving on his own in Japan during WWII.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Mitchell, 2001)
Cult status rock musical (great soundtrack) about a European transgender singer. NPH is headlining the Broadway revival but John Cameron Mitchell is amazing and rocks the main role.

Magnolia (Anderson, 1999)
P.T. Anderson's best movie. If you don't know anything about it don't look anything up. Just watch it.

Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

Groundhog Day (1993)

Gattaca (1997)

The Thief of Bagdad (the Fairbanks film, although the quite different film with Sabu is also a great film).

Nashville

Strangers on a Train

Technically a rip-off of a rip-off, since it's not my idea ;) . And I actually had hoped someone would continue threads like this too since those tend to be fun and lively. Now it's good to get a head start!

Ok here go my rec:

1. Citizen Dog (basically a Thai Amelie)
2. Speed (you probably might have seen this. If so, The Wages of Fear)
3. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Vexer we're good on both of those replacement recs. I'll be switching in Boogie Nights for Children of Men for Wilder and I'll need a replacement for On the Waterfront for Thief12. Otherwise everybody's good so far.

I'll give you a cast-off recommendation originally intended for peng (rejected on account of him having already seen it):

"Perfect Sense" (David Mackenzie, 2011)

Plus:

"Viridiana" (Luis Buñuel, 1961)
"A Matter of Life and Death" (Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger, 1946)

Z (1969) The movie I recommend to everyone. A movie that starts with a good story and then builds and builds and builds until it becomes a movie of startling power. A Great film, with a capital G.
Pan's Labyrinth (2006) Obviously
Tell No One (2006) An incredibly skillful French thriller built on an American novel. Exciting, fast-moving, suspenseful, and heartfelt.

I always confuse Tell No One which I haven't seen with Read My Lips, which I have and which is quite good.

How about this? I'll watch Read My Lips, you watch Tell No One, and we'll exchange thoughts?
