I see it as just Bond doing what Bond has always done: taking a jab at contemporary devices. In the past, Bond has taken jabs at Blaxploitation, Kung Fu films, Space Operas, Indiana Jones, Miami Vice, etc. I see Skyfall as a half-sarcastic nod to Dark Knight.

Is that a Simpson's reference?

Just face it. The "villain got caught on purpose just to show how he's manipulated everything" scene is today's big trope, just like the "press conference to announce the hero's secret identity/retirement/imminent capture" was a few years ago.

But this was a trope that was never good in the first place. I remember watching The Dark Knight being incredibly annoyed with the sheer, raw, amount of contrivance/bullshit I was being asked to swallow. And then my beloved Bond doing the same? Kills me.

That's just it. I don't think Skyfall is asking you to swallow it so much as...just be amused by it.

I think it's funny that Man of Steel reverses this trope. The hero gets captured, and it was all part of the plan of...Jor El's consciousness?

All I'll say about that is that if you have your super-dad on a thumb drive, why not ask him some more detailed questions ahead of time... like who is this Zod guy, can he be trusted, how do I kick the ass of his space technology, etc.?

And if you can't have a movie after that, then maybe you shouldn't have given Superman a thumb drive with his super-dad on it. All I'm saying.

Love this description.

My favorite Bond is On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I always go back and forth on Casino Royale, Skyfall, and From Russia with Love as my #2. I think most days I would decide on CR, but they are very, very close.

I'm not that crazy about it. Great direction and cinematography, but I thought the script and overall execution were weak.

I do agree with Kunz on the villain's plan being highly implausible and contrived, I didn't like that sort of plot device in the Dark Knight either, that sort of thing just feels like lazy writing.

Well I think one thing it does is place too much emphasis on the villain. Movies like this should be about the hero, which is part of my problem with Dark Knight. But Craig so dominates his role that not even Bardem can supplant him.

Lazy writing? Are you kidding Vex? Lazy writing would be a guy sat in a volcano directing missiles with a tv remote

Well I think what makes it good writing isn't the logistics of his plan, but the motivation. Silva has one of the most interesting motives of any villain in the series, and it's impressively holistic the way it ties into the earlier Judi Dench films. The way she acts throughout her seven entries makes it extremely believable that something like this would eventually happen to her. This consistency comes from using the same writers over and over, who have now at last finished their run. But it's clear that they were always trying to do the same general thing, and steadily got better at it: questioning Bond's relevance in today's world. Goldeneye didn't go far enough, Quantum just went in the wrong direction, and Skyfall finally got it right. After a recent revisit to it though, Goldeneye is pretty solid. Sean Bean holds it up.

I didn't mean for the whole film, just for that one particular part.

I agree that the technical aspects of the film are great and the acting was probably excellent at achieving what was sought, but (copied from my thoughts in the review thread):

I much prefer the playful Bond that enjoys his job and is much more entertaining through the transition scenes. Some of that was evident in the dialog with Eve, and quite frankly, Naomie Harris reminded me more of the Bond personality than Daniel Craig. Lots of very good actors that did not leave any kind of memorable impression.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Skyfall is the the absolute worst "Bond" film of all time. ALL TIME!
I'll just post this "honest trailer" yet again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FWfg__wKSY that touches on most of the issues. Nothing in this so called "James Bond" film has anything to do with previous "James Bond" formula, other than it has a character in it called James Bond. They should have simply created a new franchise with a character NOT called James Bond (and thus not have been needlessly compared to the ESTABLISHED definition of what a James Bond film IS), and I wouldn't have been so annoyed about the abomination that is Skyfall.

I've retorted before, and so I will again. Having seen each film several dozen times, and being familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of each one, I can say that Skyfall captures many of the better things in the Bond formula. Not ALL of them, but enough to make it beyond a worthy entry.

The filming location for the Skyfall mansion (Hankley Common near Farnham, Surrey) is currently being used for the filming of Macbeth:

A friend of mine was there at the weekend and showed me some pictures of the village set under construction.
