March 2013

Ender's Game (2013) (Hood) - 6/10
Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam/ The Golem (1920) (Wegener) - 8/10
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) (Wilder) - 3/10
Thor: The Dark World (2013) (Taylor) - 4/10
Escape Plan (2013) (Hafström) - 5/10
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) (Lawrence) - 4/10
Race with the Devil (1975) (Starret) - 4/10
Pierrot le Fou (1965) (Godard) - 6/10

I didn't manage to watch many movies at all this month and mostly average ones at that. This was balanced by watching the excellent third seasons of 'Game of Thrones' and 'Sherlock'. I generally don't subscribe to the view that the quality of TV series has overtaken that of movies, but this month it was true.

3/1 Mother (2009), 7 of 10. Maybe 7.5 if you press me.
3/11 Mr. Peabody & Sherman (7.5 of 10)
3/12 The Angels' Share (9 of 10)
3/16 Holy Motors (5.5 of 10) It's art, I tell you! Art! Art!
3/26 On Dangerous Ground (the one with Robert Ryan and Ida Lupino, 7 of 10)
3/29 Seven Chances (rewatch, 6.5 of 10)
3/30 The Beloved Rogue (silent with John Barrymore as Francois Villon; 8.0 for first hour, but it weakens to a 6.5 by the end. Striking imagery.)
3/31 And Then There Were None (1945. You lie! 6.5 of 10) I have nothing to add to what peng said yesterday in "Last Movie You Watched."

Third season of "Game of Thrones" intervened, and I simply have to listen to most of the commentaries. And good weather.

Felt long but I liked this. Unless you watched the 2008 remake which is longer and presumably not as good.

Now this I found below average due in large part to bad acting and dialogue. Adar Beck, who plays the girl with dark hair and glasses, gives one of the worst performances I've seen in any movie. Even Troma. Felt like a stage play done by Lackland Community College. It was eventually made into a stage play, apparently. They worked backward.

I thought she was decent, the film wasn't that good though, average at best.

1971 version. I enjoyed it. One of the hardest science fiction movies I've ever seen.

I agree that the one actress had line readings which were noticeably bad. However it has an an all-time great premise and it held my interest throughout. I liked it enough to vault over the 2.5/3 line.

I also liked The Andromeda Strain. As Ken said, it's very hard. And oh my --OH MY--does it have great set design
