I just heard. He was one of the greats, an actor with remarkable range.

This one hurts. He was in a bunch of my favorite movies, including The Lion in Winter and My Favorite Year and he was pretty good in whatever that sandy epic was. He was one of those actors, like Robert Redford, who looked better when his fine features got weathered a bit. He holds the record for most acting nominations without winning a competitive Oscar, which is actually an indication of how great an actor he was. I'm more impressed by an actor who was nominated eight times and lost than someone who was nominated only once and won. (He won four Golden Globes, by the way.)

One obscure film that I liked a lot was Creator, a rare example of an unreadable novel turned into a good film.

81 seems young for someone who's been there for most of my life.

I just looked up Michael Caine, and he's 80. Another actor I'll miss a lot when he's gone.

I guess it's as good a time as any to remind myself that I still haven't seen Lawrence of Arabia. Anyway, liked him in the what few films of his I saw. RIP

EIGHT Oscar noms but ZERO wins. There is no justice in this world.

You should see it. It's a very good film, and helps lengthen your attention span. Have some water at hand, because you'll get pretty thirsty.

RIP. He's great as Priam in Troy as well. Lawrence has never been my favorite epic, but it needs to be seen at least once. Has the same gigantic 70 mm aspect ratio as Space Odyssey.

He did get an Honorary one, though. :)

EDIT: The lovely Joan Fontaine has died as well. R.I.P. both of them.

had some really tough competition in some of those years. De Niro(Raging Bull), Peck(To Kill A Mockingbird), Kingsley(Gandhi), Brando(Godfather), Wayne(True Grit), Whitaker(Last King of Scotland)

He just made movies in the wrong years, then. :).

But seriously, RIP. One of the best and most iconic actors of our time.

One of my most cherished actors... Even loved him in Global Heresy.

My Favorite Year remains my #4 most favorite movie of all time...
