Avalanche Sharks looks about the same as most other Sci-Fi Channel original movies.

It doesn't appear to be a Syfy movie; apparantly it was a theatrical release.

Really? That's very interesting, seems like these types of films are appearing more often in theaters. First there was Creature(which JB reviewed) then Sharknado got a limited run, now this one.

It is quite interesting that these films are appearing more often in theatres. I would have thought that these films would more likely have been made-for-Sci-Fi Channel (or it's equivalent in Canada, Space: the Imagination Station) or have been direct-to-DVD/Netflix.

Perhaps people go to see these films in theatres as unintentional comedies in which they would have laugh at the movies (somewhat along the lines of Mystery Science Theatre) and thus feed off the audience participation. Personally, these types of movies work better at home with a group of friends, some beer and party platter, and spend a few hours making fun of every aspect of the movie, from the cheasy special effects to the corny dialogue and over-the-top to wooden acting.
