Re: The Fourth Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
Django Unchained. F*** You! The film is getting released here only in late March I think, and by that time, it will be too little too late. I have no idea why something like this happens. If it is a lesser known film, then the Oscars might help increase visibility, but why the hell a Tarantino film is delayed beats me. Oh well, at least there are apparently no cuts in the violence, only the nudity. Great nominations for the Pedros though. There are some real surprises for me. - Looper for Best Makeup is one that crossed my mind when I was doing my ballots, but I thought none of us enjoyed JGL's look in that film. It struck me as being too superficial which distracted the viewing experience more than anything else.
- I also don't understand how The Master and SLP are ensembles. I've always thought you had to have a lot of well-recognized actors playing a lot of roles for it to be considered an "ensemble". In both those films, the major characters are played by stars, but all of the smaller roles are played by lesser-known actors. The only other actor I could name from The Master was Laura Dern. For me, films like Zero Dark Thirty (Chastain, Clarke, Chandler, Strong, Ehle, Gandolfini, Duplass, Edgerton) or even Argo (Affleck, Cranston, Chandler, Goodman, Arkin, Garber) are more ensembles in the sense of the word than those films. Or maybe my understanding of the word is wrong.
- Argo getting nominated for the Pedros should quell any doubts as to whether the Oscars win was a one-off. Last year, I saw a lot of discrepancy between the Oscars and the Pedros. The Artist, for instance, wasn't even nominated for Best Picture at the Pedros. I think a lot us loved Argo, so it winning Best Picture isn't really a crime compared to previous years. Just wanted to put that out there because I fricking love the film.
- How weak was the Supporting Actress category this year? This was a great year for films but not a lot of women turned in memorable supporting performances.
- Skyfall getting nominated for Best Cinematography automatically makes the Pedros superior to anything else. Now let us all do the sane thing and give it the fricking award as well.
Great work Pedro and boy are you really quick with this stuff! EDIT: Also, why aren't we doing this inside the Annual Reelviews Academy Awards forum?

Re: The Fourth Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
Here are my thoughts on this year's nominations in general: - Not much love for Silver Linings Playbook, although I think that it has been sprinkled with enough awards this year.
- Eight nominations seems like a fair number for Best Picture, although I am quite taken aback by the lack of a nomination for The Master. It was my third favorite film of 2012, although I am glad to see that Argo and Zero Dark Thirty made the cut. Given the amount of attention it has been getting, I am also surprised to see Holy Motors not nominated. Props to Looper, however, and it is nice to see Les Misérables not get a nod.
- I cannot argue that much with the nominations for Best Director. Some nice additions would have been Michael Haneke (Amour), Leos Carax (Holy Motors), and even Rian Johnson (Looper). I have always been of the opinion that every Best Picture nominee should have its director nominated as well.
- Best Actor is fine, although I still think that Jean-Louis Trintignant was stellar in Amour.
- Would have loved to see Marion Cotillard and Rachel Weisz nominated for Best Actress, although I am pleasantly surprised by the nod for Zoe Kazan for Ruby Sparks.
- Best Supporting Actor looks fine, as does Best Supporting Actress, minus Anne Hathaway.
- The screenplay categories also look excellent. Nice to see some love for The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
- Not many people got to see The Pirates! Band of Misfits, although I still would have chosen it over Brave for Best Animated Feature.
- Best Documentary Feature is a very small category this year. If only more people had seen The Gatekeepers, How to Survive a Plague, The Invisible War, and Searching for Sugar Man. Nonetheless, my favorite documentary of 2012 was This is Not a Film, so I cannot complain.
- Best Foreign Language Film and Best Ensemble are excellent, as are all of the technical nominations.
- I am personally let-down by Best Use of Music. The Master featured one of the most mesmerizing soundtracks of 2012, while The Perks of Being a Wallflower featured some of the finest music of the 1990s. Django and Moonrise were both fine, as was The Dark Knight Rises, which is what I will probably end up voting for, but I honestly would have liked to see some different nominees here.
That is all.

Re: The Fourth Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
I apologize for not voting this year Pedro. Can't come up with a good excuse as to why not, but I'll definitely be voting for winners. Apparently the love for QT's films runs deep in the Reelview commnity. This is his 2nd film to earn 13 nominations as well. Damnit QT's films have amassed a total of 26 nominations in just four years. The nominees are fine this year. I'm glad Argo and Zero Dark Thirty are nominated, plus pleasantly surprised with The Perks of Being a Wallflower's nominated. I love the lone nomination for Perfect Sense, so weird, but fitting. How many people voted this year? Maybe one day we could do a full list of winners of each category for each year since inception and keep it updated every year? It's up to you, really.

Re: The Fourth Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
As always, many thanks and great job Pedro in compiling all the nominees. Should we PM you our choices for the winners? I don't think enough people have seen this yet. It was one I really wanted to see in theaters, but it played in Phoenix for something like a week and I missed my chance. The same thing applies to This Is Not A Film. They were just released for the home market yesterday, and I've got both of them coming to me in the next day through Netflix. Some quick thoughts: -Surprised not enough people voted for Searching For Sugar Man. - Django Unchained got more love than I was expecting. -Nice to see Ann Dowd and Zoe Kazan make the list, although I think they're in the wrong categories. I voted Kazan in the Supporting Actress category. -Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward are also nice inclusions, but Matthew McConaughey is unfortunately absent. Also, I just watched The Master again last night and it probably should have been represented more on my ballot. I completely spaced out on Jonny Greenwood's excellent score.

Re: The Fourth Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
Pretty sad at the lack of love for Beasts of the Southern Wild. Which more and more I'm thinking is my favorite from the year.
Overall, less "interesting" choices than last year. Essentially because the Oscars themselves did a much better job. Also because there were some legitimately terrific films this year. Unlike last year, when there were mostly also-rans that people had to talk themselves into.

Re: The Fourth Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
Too cool Pedro...too cool. Excellent work and many thanks. I don't have too much room to talk here, but I like what I see up there. Most of what I got to saw and thought was good made it up there. I'm also going to use this as a guide as to what to line up in my queue for 2012 viewings. Which, what amount of time do I have to *possibly* get some of those viewings in? Random thoughts... -I had Christoph Waltz in as a lead. He wasn't a lead? -Yeah, me too. I mean, I liked it quite a bit...but it seemed to get a bit of dissent here from other forum members. -As I said above, I didn't get to see too many 2012 viewings. I'm wondering what people didn't get to watch from what got nominated. -I really like the Moonrise love here. Such an original movie all around. Awesome for people* to recognize it. -Also-rans? Bones I'm not sure what you mean. -Why? Not that I'm disagreeing with you Sean (hell, I might even agree with you), but if you've got a great story/premise/idea/what-have-you...sometimes, couldn't that be enough? I know this is a terrible example, but one of my favorite movies is Swingers, not because it was directed brilliantly, but because Doug Liman allowed the story and the actors to just happen. I don't know, maybe that does make him a great director. Just trying to discuss (read: contribute) here. -You guys rock. *Reelviews members who rock.

Re: The Fourth Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
Calvero, Nope, none of the DVD/BR releases are cut. But if a film is to be released theatrically, then it should be processed by the CBFC in India, and that is where a lot of cuts take place. We're still living in Medieval times unfortunately. I can watch porn within a matter of seconds wherever I am but nudity in film is censored. Sean, I agree on The Master's music. The more you listen to it, the more hypnotizing it seems. Jonny Greenwood's score was definitely one of the best of the year. I also agree on Perks of Being a Wallflower's usage of songs. It was a great marriage of music with the content of the story. I had both in my ballot. Bones, I am with Ram here, not sure what you're getting at. However, it has to be mentioned that last year we had a unanimous masterpiece in A Separation. I've not met anybody on Reelviews who didn't love that film. So it was an obvious choice for a lot of the awards. This year I've not seen RV reach a consensus on any film. There's a lot of love for The Master from one crowd, some of us are rooting for Moonrise Kingdom... well, you get the picture. I guess that is the reason why the nominations feel more fragmented this year compared to 2011.

Re: The Fourth Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
If I had to take a stab, I'd imagine Moonrise Kingdom is the film that's going to take Best Picture. It won't be the biggest landslide in the world, but that's my expectation based on vote distribution. PM your final votes to me, everybody! I want them by Monday morning at 10:00AM PST! (I originally wrote that as 120:00AM.) ALSO (IMPORTANT), here are your nominees for the First Annual ReelViews Lifetime Achievement Award! (I forgot them in the original post. They didn't take extra time or anything.) Bill Murray Charlie Chaplin Christopher Walken Gene Hackman Hayao Miyazaki Humphrey Bogart Ingmar Bergman Jimmy Stewart Joel and Ethan Coen John Williams Martin Scorsese Max von Sydow Meryl Streep Nicolas Cage Orson Welles Robert De Niro Roger Deakins Sally Menke Stanley Kubrick Steven Spielberg Werner Herzog Woody Allen Select ten and rank them! Whoever gets 75% of the vote will win the award. I'm expecting a class of five or six, but we'll see! So many great ones to choose from.

Re: The Fourth Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
Being a fan of historical trends and what not, I just went through the last 3 awards and for what it's worth, some points of interest (maybe to a statistician).
In the 3 years, the Best Picture and Best Director have not lined up. This is a norm at the Oscars, so I was just pointing it out in our case. The best picture winner has so far won best original screenplay each year. (Inglourious Basterds, Inception, A Separation) The best director winner has so far won best film editing each year. (The Hurt Locker, The Social Network, Drive) Best sound editing and sound mixing were awarded to the same film for each year (Avatar, Inception) We have awarded Inception, The Social Network and Drive 6 awards apiece. That's the most we've awarded any film thus far. NONE of our leading actors or leading actresses wins have lined up with the Academy choices for these years.
These are just some points of interests.

Re: The Fourth Annual ReelViews Academy Awards Nominations
Also, some further points (hope I'm not boring anyone with this):
MULTIPLE NOMINEES:
Both Quentin Tarantino and Kathryn Bigelow have 2 Best Director nominations for 2009 and 2012 films. Bigelow won it in 2009. George Clooney has 2 best actor nominations, but no wins. Jennifer Lawrence has 2 best actress nominations, with 1 win in 2010 for Winter's Bone. Jessica Chastain has 2 nominations: 1 for best supporting actress for 2011 film "The Help", and a best actress nomination for "Zero Dark Thirty". Christoph Waltz has 2 best supporting actor nominations.
That is all.

Given that the deadline is in two hours and only SEVEN people have sent me votes, I'm going to extend the deadline for another forty-eight hours.

Love how Zoe Kazan gets a mention in the best actress catergory. If Ruby Sparks didn't deserve a mention for best original screenplay, I'll be fucked if I know why not?

Close but no cigar kind of situation. I voted for the film myself. I have the winners and I'm working on the visual presentation. Something else is in the works, too. Stay tuned!
