So far, how would you describe this year in movies? Good? Bad? Terrible? Might be too early to judge, but still...

I might as well make a list of my best of the year so far, although I will not be including any obscure titles or films I saw at Sundance. I am simply going off of the movies James has reviewed thus far. Here we go.

1. Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects - ***1/2
2. Dustin Hoffman's Quartet - ***
3. Jonathan Levine's Warm Bodies - **1/2
4. Andres Muschietti's Mama - **
5. Don Coscarelli's John Dies at the End - **
6. Taylor Hackford's Parker - *
7. Ruben Fleischer's Gangster Squad - *
8. Walter Hill's Bullet to the Head - *
9. Jee-woon Kim's The Last Stand - *
10. Allen Hughes' Broken City - 1/2*
11. Seth Gordon's Identity Thief - Zero stars

No Movie 43, seeing as James never got around to reviewing this tour de force.

I think this year has been pretty good so far, only seen four films in theaters (Last Stand, Parker, Bullet To The Head and Identity Thief) but i've liked them all. Also really looking forward to seeing "A Good Day To Die Hard" this month.

As I mentioned elsewhere, at least 95% of the movies that come out during the first 4 months of any given year are basically shit, so I'd say it's much too early to to start passing judgment on 2013 film-wise.

BTW, "Quartet" is technically from 2012. :P

I've seen six 2013 movies thus far. I LOVED Side Effects. A great thriller. I enjoyed The Last Stand and Gangster Squad a lot. Parker was pretty good. And Bullet to the Head was okay. The weakest film of the year was Texas Chainsaw 3D which was a pretty typical, mediocre, run in the mill slasher flick for the first half, but I actually thought got pretty interesting in the last act when the lines between who the bad guys were and who the good guys were got a bit blurred. Overall, it was okay.

And this has been a decent year so far. Of course I didn't end up seeing Movie 43 which quite frankly I don't really know what to make of. Identity Thief, I'll see eventually but it looks terrible.

None of the 2013 movies have tempted me so far, but Side Effects looks really good. It starts here tomorrow.

I don't think I've seen anything from 2013 yet.
