Post Great turn... shame about the film!
Since we had a mini-consensus that Ed Norton's performance was possibly more than American History X deserved, I thought it would be an idea to look at what other performances bested the films in which they were (unjustly) contained.

I'll go first - Christian Bale was a very good Pat Bateman in a generally lackluster American Psycho.

I've always felt that once you took Denzel Washington's performance out of the equation, Training Day was simply an average "Corrupt cop" movie.

Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart overcame the average script.

Yeah Training Day was definately fuck up-able in the hands of another actor.

I do like that film though.

Invicitus has a great performance from Morgan Freeman, but not much else. Samuel L Jackson was the only good thing in the otherwise forgettable cop thriller "Twisted"

Seth Rogen in Observe and Report.

Great performance in a movie that no way deserved for it was directed by a goddamn idiot.

I kind of liked Observe and Report. I mean, who would have thought to remake Taxi Driver as a comedy?

I liked Observe & Report, too. But then, I tend to go in for movies like that.

The similarities to Taxi Driver were not lost on me, but I think it has more to do with the similarities to a lot of Paul Schrader works, which in turn are similar to Bresson, Dostoevsky, etc. Fractured loners and their attempts to either fit into the world or make it fit them.
