*Fuck it. I didn't count the feature-length episodes of Sherlock last time, so I'm counting this 4.5 hour chunk of narrative.

That and cramming three seasons of Doctor Who into one month so I could be caught up for Day of the Doctor. That was a bit of a time sink.

You wouldn't believe how many household chores I've been shirking. I'm like the Dutch boy with his finger in the dam.

But that also means I've got a backlog of movies I've been meaning to watch, starting with Cronenberg's The Dead Zone, which I saw once as a teenager.

The Dead Zone's just a darn solid film. Also, please say "finger in the dyke" for maximum puerile pun possibilities.

I'm gonna start watching Dr. Who this month too. Been too long since I watched a fun sci-fi show (the delightful Orphan Black this year being the exception). What did you think of it?

It's a lot of fun. It's sci-fi, but it's written in a fast-paced, freewheeling way that's right up my alley. It's not frivolous, though. It definitely has a heart, and there's an undercurrent of seriousness (thankfully not overstated) that holds the whole thing together.

I started with the Matt Smith episodes, which is a pretty good jumping-in point. I'll probably start the Christopher Eccleston episodes soon and work my way back up to where I came in--watching at a much more conservative pace, of course.

Now that I know you're 17, I'm kind of impressed (and slightly jealous) by the movies you've been watching. I try to remember back then what I watched... and come up with a memory of marathoning 5 seasons of 24 over the summer :) .

I only started seriously watching movies this year, and I'm trying to watch as many great movies as I can as quickly as possible. There is a daunting amount of cinematic history to catch up on, and I feel pressured to get it done. I'm so thankful that I'm starting at an early age.

My nephew is 17 and has become quite the film buff. We often go back and forth with films he has seen that I don't, or viceversa. He even says he wants to be a director.

Remember this thread?

12/1 Frozen (8 of 10)
12/5 Bad Girl (7.5 of 10)
12/9 Brief Encounter (7 of 10. I don't understand the classic status of this film.)
12/15 The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (3-d but alas not IMAX, 7.5 of 10)
also A Century of Quilts: America in Cloth, a tv documentary that a friend rented from Netflix. 8.5 of 10. The best quilts are stunning, and it's a surprisingly interesting subject.
12/16 New Orleans: Music in Exile (documentary, 6.5 of 10. What happened to New Orleans musicians in the immediate wake of Katrina)
12/21 Before Midnight (7.5 of 10)
12/22 John Carter (6.5 of 10)
12/24 The Return of Frank James (6 of 10)
12/24 The Libertine (5.5 of 10)
12/25 A Knight's Tale (rewatch, 7.5 of 10)
12/26 Beach Party (6.5 of 10)
12/26 Beach Blanket Bingo (4.5 of 10)
12/27 Out of the Past (rewatch, 8 of 10)
12/30 The Wolf of Wall Street (8.5 of 10)
12/31 Saving Mr. Banks (8.5 of 10)
12/31 American Hustle (7 of 10)

No great films, three fine films (two from this year and a quilting doc), and only one really negative assessment. The best film I mostly saw was 2/3rds of The Shop Around the Corner, which I've seen many times and is 9.0 at least. One of those films that, if I come across in the middle of the film, I have to watch the rest. Young Frankenstein, My Man Godfrey and The Princess Bride are other examples. We also watched (in my case rewatched) at least half of The Black Swan, which is 8 of 10.

The worst film I watched part of was The Robe, one of those insufferable Biblical epics from the 50s and 60s of which Ben-Hur is about the only one worth watching. Really, the best of them is Monty Python's Life of Brian (and The Last Temptation of Christ, of course).

I had a houseguest from December 22-29, and she brought a bunch of films, hence John Carter and The Libertine, neither of which I intended to watch (and didn't really mind; I like John Carter and A Knight's Tale). That's also why I have beach party movies, of which you can expect more. I'm really glad she didn't bring her Rob Schneider collection.
