Post Re: Viewing Journal -- 2013
I was going on my Martin Scorsese marathon and that accounts for almost 90% of my viewings for March. I now realize that I may have overestimated in saying I will watch all His movies within a month, but it's also good in that I was able to squeeze in so many films only because I set that target.

3/2/13: Who's That Knocking at My Door (1967): 3/4
3/3/13: What's a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This (1963): 2.5/4
3/3/13: It's Not Just You, Murray! (1964): 3.5/4
3/3/13: Big Shave, The (1967): 3/4
3/6/13: Boxcar Bertha (1972): 2.5/4
3/6/13: Argo (2012): 4/4 (*)
3/8/13: Mean Streets (1973): 3.5/4
3/11/13: Italianamerican (1974): 4/4
3/11/13: Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974): 3.5/4
3/12/13: Taxi Driver (1976): 4/4
3/14/13: New York, New York (1977): 3.5/4
3/16/13: Last Waltz, The (1978): 4/4
3/16/13: American Boy: A Profile of Steven Prince (1978): 3.5/4
3/20/13: King of Comedy, The (1983): 3/4
3/23/13: Django Unchained (2012): 3.5/4
3/23/13: After Hours (1985): 4/4
3/24/13: Color of Money, The (1986): 3/4

Ken wrote:
I would like to point out that Gone In 60 Seconds achieved a full three stars.

I realize the system doesn't necessarily work this way, but this would imply that Chinatown is halfway from Gone In 60 Seconds to Wedding Crashers in terms of quality.

EDIT:

I'm not out to give anybody a hard time. I just think that grading movies is funny for precisely this reason.

That's the exact problem I've been having. I do not think that Wedding Crashers is a better movie than Chinatown, but I enjoy it more than Chinatown so I feel that if I give a better rating to Chinatown than Wedding Crashers then I'm basically lying just to appeal to the taste of others. It is the problem that Ken hints at earlier. I feel like star ratings should be an indication of how I feel about a movie, so if Wedding Crashers is my favorite comedy and I view Chinatown as a very good film but not one of my favorites then Wedding Crashers should be rated higher. I have struggled mightily (mostly in private) with how to rate movies because of the huge differences between films such as Wedding Crashers and Chinatown, a prime example. I also agree with Kunz' point that the movie takes a slight nosedive for 20minutes or so after the leads are revealed as liars, but it is still my favorite (I know that he was referring to a bigger portion of the movie than this but I disagree on this). I do need to rewatch Chinatown as well because my first viewing involved a laptop in a house filled with people, loud children, and many distractions that may have detracted from my viewing experience and appreciation of the intricacies of the film. Also, as I pointed out earlier, I gave Gone in 60 Seconds 3 stars mostly out of nostalgia and my love for it as a developing adolescent more than anything. Do I think it is better in terms of quality than most of the shit that is released around this time of year? Not really, but in my mind I view it much more favorably so I gave it a better rating. In reality it is probably a 2 star movie, but I enjoy it way too much for it to be given that rating. And that is the problem with ratings overall. I have been making a top 100 favorite movie list since I was 9, but obviously as I have grown and developed my tastes have changed. It is very difficult to rate very different movies on the same scale. I have no idea how to rank films such as Schindler's List and The Hangover on the same list. That being said I have decided that how much I like the film should be the ultimate indicator in terms of my personal rating of it, leading to 3 stars for Gone in 60 Seconds and 4 stars for Wedding Crashers.

Anyways on to March:

A pretty good month in terms of viewings for it not to be a Christmas or Summer break month. A # denotes a repeat viewing. All star ratings out of 4.

Leon: The Professional ***
#Lord of the Ring: The Two Towers ****
#Lord of the RIngs: The Return of the King ****
Heat***1/2
Charlie Wilson's War***1/2
Spring Breakers**
Olympus has Fallen**1/2 borderline ***
25th Hour***

A pretty good month for me in that I saw two theatrical releases. The overall quality of my viewings wasn't spectacular, but it was pretty good. I enjoyed Heat and Charlie Wilson's War more than I thought I would. I was disappointed by 25th Hour, I was hoping for more although it was still a good movie. Spring Breakers had some good elements but had some really bad ones as well and I just don't think it worked as a whole, though I personally relate very closely to the issue that the film is all about. Olympus has Fallen was entertaining but I'm not sure if its worthy of a three star rating so I demoted it to a lower one. I finally started watching Homeland this month, though not as good as the hype indicates, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I also started watching The Americans, and I have to say it is my favorite new cable show in quite a long time .

I have a blog entry about it in the works but, even though I have seen it dozens of times, this last time I paid more attention to David Threlfall's performance (the one who plays Kritzinger) and it was great. I usually praise Branagh, Tucci, and Firth, but that guy was just as good.

That's the most movies I've seen since last June, when I saw eight titles.

Goes without saying but, don't watch Magnolia when it's on television. Kills all momentum, amongst other things, in that brilliant film.
