I feel cynical about this project.

And the reviews I've just read don't exactly convince me otherwise. I don't have complete faith in Jackson the storyteller.

I'm cautiously optimistic, but seeing it in the 70's on RT is a bit unnerving/ Usually the ratings start out high and descend from there once the soft-spot critics have been taken.

The newness created by TLotR is now a been-there-done-that, so this one will need good storytelling.

I'm in the minority that the first hour of King Kong, though unnecessary plotwise in its length, was really captivating as world-building, so similar complaints in The Hobbit doesn't bode as worrisome for me (and the added stuff comes from the book(s), not thought up like King Kong, so that's more assurance), although its running time certainly has me wondered. Three movies from The Hobbit and the appendixes are stretching it a bit though still fine by me, but must each of them have its length pushing three hours?

Also, looking at the negative reviews (which dishearteningly includes Todd McCarthy), I'm kind of speechless by this one from James Rocchi:

"Tolkien could invent names and languages, but he couldn't create a plot at gunpoint."

I pretty much agree with that statement, I could never get into the stories myself and kept noticing examples of Fridge Logic, and I did not like the King Kong remake at all, I found to be incredibly tedious and lifeless, I for one wish Jackson would go back to doing horror films.

even the 'fresh' reviews sound lukewarm. wonder if there could be a Matrix Revolutions like drop in BO by part 2 & 3.

Probably the most apt description might be, "Not as bad as I feared, but not as good as I hoped."

I, being an unabashed Tolkien fanboy (I have extremely rare editions of both the Hobbit and LOTR, and at one point could read and write Elvish, using the actual Elvish characters no less), have no doubt that I will be happy with the result. Bloated? Too much story? Too many characters? I say bring it on. I just can't wait for the blu-ray extended versions so I can have my whole weekend Tolkien film orgy in three years...

I'm more worried about how I will react to the 48 fps...

I think that the expectations for this film thanks to the previous LoTR films may be too high
Could this be "Phantom of the Menace " all over again.
