It's a very sad article. The writer of this film's first negative review, a woman, received both death threats and rape threats. It's not a joke anymore, and it has crossed a line to the extent where the film itself cannot be divorced from the fanboy nutjob reactions. Several friends of mine who were planning to see the midnight strongly considered canceling their tickets, since they don't want to get shot. Is this really what it's come to? What ever happened to just putting on a movie as a way to kill time for a couple hours, or just going out to the movies as a social practice? The banter emitted from Nolan's fans isn't passion for movies, it's not passion for Batman, and it may not even be passion for him. It's just sickness.

Agreed, and it's not just Nolan, it's the same case with a lot of popular films, say you don't like the LOTR series and you get glares and people call you crazy, I can only imagine how much hate critics who give The Hobbit a negative review will get from.

Do you have any examples of that with LOTR stuff? I don't think it's happened on that level at all. LOTR fans are a different breed... they might think you're crazy, but they don't rise up with death/rape threats. The breed of fan seen here is compromised of idiotic little boys (of any age) who rarely leave their rooms except to see TDK 48 times.

Fans of LOTR are more confident in their product, I feel. I don't think anyone's going to lose their mind over those who don't like the Hobbit.

James just tweeted: TDKR delivers! Review coming soon.

Looks like we can chalk up another positive review! I'm predicting 3.5/4.

It's disturbing and truly disgusting to behold. Who are these people and how can they live with themselves?

I don't think there's a whole lot of difference between those things and this:

It's all just fanboy overreaction and nonsense. Sure, some might use more colorful/vulgar language, but it's the same concept. I don't think any (aside from maybe 1 or 2 psychos) are serious (and for the record, I'm not dumb enough to actually be offended by any of this, either), but it's kind of insane how defensive people get over a movie they haven't even seen.

It's all just internet nerds talking a bunch of shit. Yeah, it's stupid and immature, but that's the internet in a nutshell, really.

I mean every time Vexer says he likes stupid shit like Ecks vs Server and doesn't like critical darlings, or Mgamescook says that The Avengers is the worst movie he has seen this year and hates Nolan's movies (but defends shit like Resident Evil)...I think to myself.."I want to murder these people," and kick a baby!...it's just a 1/2 second flash though...I would never go through with it.............most likely............but seriously......

I agree with this and I think everyone has initial reactions that a pretty similar at times that are followed by the realization that you don't want to kill these people and that they aren't complete morons. And then you try to figure out why they think that. In the defense of Vexer and MGames though, they're at least giving opinions of movies they've seen and can legitimately talk about. The folks defending TDKR haven't seen more than 5 minutes of the entire movie!

I think the same way whenever someone praises an overrated POS like Gladiator.

Yeah, and every time I hear someone call liking Mission to Mars moronic, while Avengers is apparently an intelligent blockbuster, I want to...better not even say it.

I don't think either film is particularly intelligent, though i'll take the latter over the former any day.

What about on a day when you have a deadline or need to get to sleep earlier? You might choose the film that's 40 mins shorter and that doesn't have a relentless string of loud, obnoxious explosions to annoy the neighbors. Anyway, there's no urgent need to defend Mission to Mars at this time. I love the film, and I think it's one of the more visually unique and uplifting movies I have ever seen. After 12 years, it's a small, forgotten movie that I think is worth sticking up for.

The term "critics' darling" used to mean something the critics had to promote in order for it to be popular. Now, it's the other way around. The critics have to promote a movie in order for the critics themselves to be popular. I don't think a film that grosses a $200 mil opening weekend needs to be promoted by anyone. Seriously, think of the phrase "this critic goes to bat for The Avengers." It's laughable. Not even laughable, it doesn't make any sense.

Am I the only person here who doesn't become emotionally compromised when discovering that people dislike stuff that I like?

I mean, shit. I've been dismayed to see people use poor arguments to defend their opinions, which can get legitimately ridiculous, but I can't think of a time that I've been angry enough to tell someone (for example) to "die in a fire" just because they disliked a movie.

Well I don't have any neighbors to worry about as I live in a pretty remote area, i'll only watch Mission To Mars if i'm looking for a cure for insomnia.

What are you talking about here? Because it seems to be in reference to the article, but I have no idea how your friends possibly being shot relates to the death threats received by these critics. Do they live in a really bad neighbourhood or something? I couldn’t imagine attending a cinema where I had to fear for my life.

Of course, I don’t think anyone is taking it too seriously. Well, except for MGames, but he always gets little melodramatic when Nolan is involved.

It’s still unsettling though. I’m sure movie critics, particularly those who have made their way onto Rotten Tomatoes, are used to this kind of thing, but I don’t think I could ever get used to people saying they wanted to kill me, regardless of how serious the actual threats are.

And like you said, most of these people would never carry out any of the stuff they threaten, but you’d have to hope that nobody would actually take the next step…

Well, it's not just an issue of the death threats being carried out (I can't believe I just said that in this context), but it's an issue of fan behavior affecting critics' livelihoods in other ways. For example, Marshall Fine's site was temporarily crashed due to the inrush of infuriated fanboys. Certainly not as big a deal as if he were actually murdered (again, can't believe I'm saying this), but it's still pretty appalling.

I think it's just their mouths running away. One female critic who gave it a rotten review (Lemire I think?) got comments about rape and all the bad stuff that can be called and done to women, but it just seemed so empty, a case of Because I Could Say This Anonymously So I Did. If the site's threat of linking facebook to the review's comments become true, I'm sure those cowards' strong language would instantly vanish.

About Marshall Fine, well, I only read his review blurb on Rottentomatoes (Apart from James' I didn't read any full review), and the first thought that came to my mind is sometimes trolling goes both way. I mean, his phrasing there (most critics usually edit and decide fresth/rotten on their own reviews in RT blurbs) was all but an invitation for rampage.

I have to admit, I think sometimes critics instigate fans--but very rarely, and certainly not to any level that might invite the kind of response that critics who negatively reviewed TDKR have gotten.

(For an example of a legitimate case of a critic inviting a negative fan response, look no further than Anthony Lane's review of The Amazing Spider-Man.)

She's nobody, now, since more negative reviews of this film have been gathered to keep her's company.

Spiderman 3 is one of the very worst films I've ever seen. I can't believe a film student would endorse something so fundamentally unwatchable.

There's nothing fundamental about its unwatchability. It's another Spider-man movie, and as such, was very disappointing. But as a 2.5 hour diversion, I'll take it any day over a number of other 2.5 hour diversions I could think of....

You must have watched a different Spiderman 3 than moi then because the one I watched was like 120 or so 1 minute montages strung together on something not remotely resembling a coherent timeline. It was epically shit on a massive scale.

For the first time ever movie-review aggregating site RottenTomatoes.com has suspended user comments after fans erupted with anger after critics gave negative reviews of the film "The Dark Knight Rises."

"The job of policing the comments became more than my staff could handle for that film, so we stopped the comments altogether," the site's editor-in-chief Matt Atchity said in an open letter. "It just got to be too much hate-based on reactions to reviews of movies that people hadn't even seen."

Atchity said comments will be disabled on "The Dark Knight" for a few days.

The site disabled user comments on reviews Tuesday after Christy Lemire of The Associated Press and Hollywood & Fine's Marshall Fine attracted negative and threatening comments.

Fine wrote in his review that "anyone forecasting serious Oscar love for this lumpish, tedious film has been smoking too much of that potent, prescription California weed."

"Since the referral traffic seems to have crashed his server, we've temporarily removed the review link at Fine's request, so his site can go back up," said Atchity.

http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/ro ... ovies.html

I know you'all are sick of Cook constantly bashing Nolan, but you got to admit he has, by far, the largest amount of disturbed nerdy fanboys of any film/director on the internets, maybe that's a factor in his disdain for him, can't imagine being a film student today surrounded by every one of your 20 year old peers drinking the kool aid (not to mention a Dark Knight fan apparently hacked his youtube account & deleted his james bond reviews after he posted a negative Dark Knight review)

And the imdb boards are even more crazy than RT. fans of Star Wars or LOTR don't flood The Godfather with scores of '1s' just to help Dark Knight get to #1 there. nor do they constantly post threads on that message board. The cycle will continue come Friday, Shawshank will no doubt as well get an influx of 1's around then.
