It's not a joke anymore, and it has crossed a line to the extent where the film itself cannot be divorced from the fanboy nutjob reactions. Several friends of mine who were planning to see the midnight strongly considered canceling their tickets, since they don't want to get shot. Is this really what it's come to? What ever happened to just putting on a movie as a way to kill time for a couple hours, or just going out to the movies as a social practice? The banter emitted from Nolan's fans isn't passion for movies, it's not passion for Batman, and it may not even be passion for him. It's just sickness.

Agreed, and it's not just Nolan, it's the same case with a lot of popular films, say you don't like the LOTR series and you get glares and people call you crazy, I can only imagine how much hate critics who give The Hobbit a negative review will get from.

Yeah, and every time I hear someone call liking Mission to Mars moronic, while Avengers is apparently an intelligent blockbuster, I want to...better not even say it.

I don't think either film is particularly intelligent, though i'll take the latter over the former any day.

What about on a day when you have a deadline or need to get to sleep earlier? You might choose the film that's 40 mins shorter and that doesn't have a relentless string of loud, obnoxious explosions to annoy the neighbors. Anyway, there's no urgent need to defend Mission to Mars at this time. I love the film, and I think it's one of the more visually unique and uplifting movies I have ever seen. After 12 years, it's a small, forgotten movie that I think is worth sticking up for.

The term "critics' darling" used to mean something the critics had to promote in order for it to be popular. Now, it's the other way around. The critics have to promote a movie in order for the critics themselves to be popular. I don't think a film that grosses a $200 mil opening weekend needs to be promoted by anyone. Seriously, think of the phrase "this critic goes to bat for The Avengers." It's laughable. Not even laughable, it doesn't make any sense.

There's nothing fundamental about its unwatchability. It's another Spider-man movie, and as such, was very disappointing. But as a 2.5 hour diversion, I'll take it any day over a number of other 2.5 hour diversions I could think of....

Am I the only person here who doesn't become emotionally compromised when discovering that people dislike stuff that I like?

I mean, shit. I've been dismayed to see people use poor arguments to defend their opinions, which can get legitimately ridiculous, but I can't think of a time that I've been angry enough to tell someone (for example) to "die in a fire" just because they disliked a movie.

For the first time ever movie-review aggregating site RottenTomatoes.com has suspended user comments after fans erupted with anger after critics gave negative reviews of the film "The Dark Knight Rises."

"The job of policing the comments became more than my staff could handle for that film, so we stopped the comments altogether," the site's editor-in-chief Matt Atchity said in an open letter. "It just got to be too much hate-based on reactions to reviews of movies that people hadn't even seen."

Atchity said comments will be disabled on "The Dark Knight" for a few days.

The site disabled user comments on reviews Tuesday after Christy Lemire of The Associated Press and Hollywood & Fine's Marshall Fine attracted negative and threatening comments.

Fine wrote in his review that "anyone forecasting serious Oscar love for this lumpish, tedious film has been smoking too much of that potent, prescription California weed."

"Since the referral traffic seems to have crashed his server, we've temporarily removed the review link at Fine's request, so his site can go back up," said Atchity.
