Django not eligible for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nom

Quote:
The Writers Guild of America has remained rigorous on qualifying screenplays for its awards with more than a dozen notable exclusions this year including Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" and William Nicholson's "Les Miserables."

Ballots began arriving in recent days in member mailboxes for voting on 112 eligible screenplays -- 44 in the adapted category and 68 in the original category.

The guild's restrictions require that scripts be produced under WGA jurisdiction or under a collective bargaining agreement in Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or the U.K. and that the scripts be formally submitted for consideration.

That leaves several notable candidates out of the WGA awards mix, including "Amour," "Brave," "Django Unchained," "The Impossible," "Middle of Nowhere," "Les Miserables," "Seven Psychopaths," "Take this Waltz" and "Your Sister's Sister" in the original category. Exclusions in the adapted field include "Les Miserables," "Anna Karenina," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Intouchables," "Quartet" and "Rust and Bone."

I'm not sure how its WGA ineligibility makes it ineligible for an Oscar. That said, the WGA are a bunch of clowns. If they want to honor films then they should honor films. Don't put so many restrictions on an award that has little bearing to begin with. Oh, Tarantino's not a member? All I heard was wahhhhhhhh.

I highly doubt that QT really cares about the Oscars after getting snubbed for the Best Picture award for Pulp Fiction back in 1995. If they're not willing to recognize one of the most influential films in cinema, then they've proven how truly worthless they are as far as honoring *films* is concerned.

Pfffft, I ain't arguing that the Academy has any worth. I'd handily lose that argument. I'm just good at predicting their bullshit.

Gotcha. My friends and I used to make a game of predicting how the Academy would make their award picks based on their politics, but we just don't care anymore.

Here's where I'll tout the annual Oscars drinking game I play with my friends. Get a sheet with all the categories and nominees (at least all the ones that are televised), pick a winner in each category, and then take a shot of the liquor of your choice each time you choose incorrectly. Do as much or as little research leading up to Oscar night as you want. I do very little, aside from listening to what Pedro has to say on the subject. In many ways, or really, just this one way, you could easily make the case the Pedro has single handedly saved my life the past few years.

If the aim is to avoid puking, I can see this working as a drinking game. If the aim is to get blink drunk, on the other hand, then it's better to play the Casino drinking game (take a shot of hard liquor every time the word "fuck" is used in the film).

I do what I can. I'm having a little more trouble than usual with this year's crop. Few categories super predictable, especially in the technical departments.

QT gets a screenplay nod from the academy today despite the wga snub.

oh, he cares. see the Howard Stern interview("can't believe they gave Hurt Locker screenplay!")
I think they all care, except Woody Allen(only one who never attends)

Small-talk with a radio host isn't enough to convince me. QT has always struck me as the kind of director who does whatever he damn well pleases. That kind of attitude usually doesn't lend itself to caring about what a bunch of political farts voting on an industry award think.

Weinstein certainly cares, in any case.
