Name your top five movies you already saw 2012 and 5 to see

Call me crazy, but my favourite film of the year so far is...The Dictator! It's terribly uneven, but the highs are so much higher than Bruno. There were two parts for which I actually had trouble staying in my chair. Not a great film by any stretch, but easily the most I've laughed in a theatre since The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Since I haven't seen 5 films yet this year, I will name only the films I'm going to be seeing:

Prometheus
Skyfall
The Dark Knight Rises
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Django Unchained
Dredd

I may check out The Amazing Spider-Man, but I'm a little iffy on it. Still, this year has in my opinion already been a big improvement over the last as far as films goes. Last year, I could have counted the films I had any anticipation for on one hand and had fingers left over.

If Baz Lurman turns out a Gatsby movie that is anything other than dogshit, I'll eat my shoe.*

Come on, Ken. A lot of great people have eaten shoes. Charlie Chaplin. Werner Herzog. Don't you want to be cool like them?

They don't make shoes like they used to. Back in the day, it was all leather and canvas. Fine cuisine, as far as shoes go. Nowadays, you don't know what you're getting.

Post Re: Name your top five movies you already saw 2012 aJnd 5 to see
#1 - Moonrise Kingdom
#2 - The Grey
#3 - Jeff, Who Lives At Home
#4 - Chronicle
#5 - I'll have to get back to you on this one

I haven't seen many 2012 movies (Jeff, Who Lives At Home may count as a 2011 movie) as I've been catching up on last year's crop. I strongly doubt #3 and down will make any top 10 list I submit at year's end.

Looking forward to the new Tarantino, P.T. Anderson and Haneke films. Others may jump onto my radar at some later point.

And of you Gatsby-anticipators see any of the other filmed versions?

2000 (TV version, Mira Sorvino and others): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0210719/
1949 (Alan Ladd, Betty Field): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041428/

I watched this one in middle school after reading the novel for the first time. I don't remember much about it, but when I reread the novel again last year, I pictured Robert Redford as Gatsby the whole way through. So it must have left some impression.

Shame about the new one being pushed back. The trailer scared me, but I was still looking forward to seeing it in December.

Might as well post an updated Top 5:

1. Moonrise Kingdom
2. Perfect Sense
3. Beasts Of The Southern Wild
4. Chico & Rita
5. The Secret World Of Arrietty

That said, the rest of the year looks very promising. This is one of the more interesting summer lineups I can remember, and as you said, the fall looks like it could be pretty stellar. 2012 has the potential to go down as one of the better movie years in recent memory. I'm pretty excited.

I said this on the last day of May. Boy, what a disappointment this summer was. There was letdown after letdown. The only 2 movies I saw that I actually liked were small, independent films (Moonrise Kingdom and Safety Not Guaranteed).

I don't think the year as a whole has much of a chance to go down as a really good year anymore, but there's a ton of potential for the fall/winter. Hopefully, some of the movies live up to that potential.

I watched this a while back based on your recommendation and I'll join you in singing its praises. I think a lot of the forumites would enjoy it. It's funny, sweet, and smart.

Hey, cool! I figured it would go unseen until it hit basic cable. The only thing I didn't like about it was that nervous tic pan/zoom thing the Brothers Duplass always use. Jason Segel was driven, the end was nice, Judy Greer and Anne Heche are basically the same person... I don't know if it will make this years top of the pops but I wouldn't be sorry to see it stick around.

4. Armour (Haneke, motherfuckers!)

My eyes weep, my mind leaps simultaneously in joy and terror while I get an intellectual hard on and hate myself for it whenever Haneke releases a new film... in case you can tell I'm often divided by that Austrian motherfucker. As long as its more Cache ( :D ) than Funny Games ( ), I very well might be into it.

Someone should start a thread on Haneke and debate the convergences between such disparate movies as Funny Games and Cache.
