Post 35th anniversary of "Star Wars" - May 25th
May 25th marks the 35th anniversary of "Star Wars".

So who is a fan of this sci-fi film from George Lucas? :P

Meh, I always found the original film somewhat overrated, call me crazy, but I would quite honestly rather watch the prequels.

I like the Star Wars movies. They were never as big an influence on me as a writer/duirector as other movies. But I like em. The originals anyway. If I were to rank em (scale of * to ****)

In series order

Star Wars ****
The Empire Strikes Back ****
Return Of The Jedi ***

The Phantom Menace **1/2
Attack Of The Clones ***1/2
Revenge Of The Sith ****

It seems that I'd find as much to disagree with you on the quality of the prequel films as I would with JB's reviews of them. ;)

I came to it late. I was 16 when during the initial run and never joined the excitement or cared about seeing it. Think I finally saw it about a decade later on TV and thought it was pretty good. Move ahead to 2 years ago. My son (then 6 years old) started reading Star Wars related books in his school library and became interested. We watched all 6 in the order they were originally released in a period of about 3 weeks and I became a big fan. There were some stretches in Attack of the Clones that bored me, but overall, I really enjoyed the experience. I would actually put 3 of the episodes (2 prequals :o ) ahead of "A New Hope". However, it is number 1 in level of importance.

Can't help but wonder what it was like in the atmosphere of the original release, I wasn't there. As it is, the only nostalgic feeling this creates within me is a hightened awareness that my life is now 35 years shorter than it was then.

Well I was age 16 when I saw the first Star Wars movie on the big screen. I liked it quite a lot, but I found it too overcrowded with main characters. Too many to identify with one. The story also was a bit fuzzy for me back then: Rebels, an evil Empire, Darth Vader, a young "student" and his old mentor, a princess who is part of the rebels (what the heck: was this a monarchy before the Empire "dictatorship" or what? I didn't care about politics or history at age 16 - now I do) a carefree but cynical cowboy-ish bounty hunter (Han Solo), two robots and one of them is a chatterbox supposed to be a translator (they looked more like Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello to me) ...... kind of confusing and cluttered for my poor brain which was, at age 16, much busier thinking about making it through high school.

I was floored though when I first watched "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980 at age 19, one of the very few movies I went to see a second time just a few days later. This was like: now we are talking! Sooo much better.
