What movies should be remade or deserve sequels?
Author Message
Post What movies should be remade or deserve sequels?
Part of the problem I think with the recent glut of sequels/remakes is that Hollywood is making some *really* poor choices as to what should be remade or rebooted or what movies deserve sequels or more sequels as the case may be. Conan the Barbarian and Fright Night probably being good examples of movies that did not need to be remade. PotC: On Stranger Tides being an example of a completely unnecessary sequel.

Of course, there's the numbers game afoot in which the fact that there is a glut of sequels and remakes, which does compounds the problem. But there are examples of remakes and sequels out there that are better then the original or expand the story in interesting ways. I mean the reason I'm asking this question is I just watched Nolan's Insomnia and I found it to be a compelling example of neo-noir cinema. Not sure if it was better than the original or even needed to be made, but I really liked it personally.

So if people here had a choice in the matter, what movies deserve sequels and what movies could use the benefit of a remake? If it's a remake, what should be changed or who should direct, etc.

My choices:
Logan's Run - The original wasn't too bad, but feels like it wastes a lot of it's potential. There are some interesting ideas here that combined with the dark grittiness of Blade Runner, could make for an awsome Sci Fi thriller.
Change: Darker, Gritter, and the stuff with the robot in the ice caves should be cut altogether.

Bronson - I'm sure the most violent prisoner in Great Britain would make for a compelling subject for a motion picture, but making an extended avent garde music video using some of the details of his life really was not the best way to do that.
The Change: Given David Fincher's work on Fight Club, have him direct but still cast Tom Hardy in the title role.

The Golden Compass - It's unfortunate that the other two books in His Dark Materials trilogy were not made into movies as well. I would list this as one movie deserving of two sequels. I would also argue that after a slow start, this is one series that get's much better as it goes along, with The Golden Compass being the weakest book of the series anyways.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - Alexander Payne is listed as being a scriptwriter, yet it's hard to imagine something this tepid and heteronormative coming from his pen.
Change: Kevin James was okay, but Sandler should never have been cast. Have it directed by John Cameron Mitchell to give it the necessary zing and you would have one rocking movie.

Master and Commander is my perennial answer for "movies that need a sequel." They set up a great cast of characters--now let's see them in another adventure!

I'd like to see the entire Star Wars prequel trilogy rebooted, not remade. They need rebooting by someone who actually knows how to tell a story and develop characters unlike a certain fatass billionaire who is looking to make a buck.

None. Any source material worh the time is likely to be treated worse than before in this climate.

Even though I thought it was slightly overrated, I would agree that this would be more deserving then 90% of movies that do get sequels.

Sure, today's movie making climate is horrible, but I was thinking more along the lines of what movies should be remade under ideal circumstances, not necessarily in today's climate.

Agreed...though I wonder if they would continue to carve up the books (the original film pulled from 3 of the 20 novels in the series), do a straight adaptation of one book, or do an original story using the characters. I would assume they'd continue to amalgamate books and storylines.

American History X 2 - How Derek finds life as a mild-mannered clerk for a packaging company.

The Matrix 3 - part 2 - Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse.

Inglorious 2- The boys (the ones left alive) travel to the Soviet Union and behead Stalin in the middle of Red Square.

There is in fact a Logan's Run remake in the works and Nicholas Winding Refn is currently attached to it.

I agree about there being too many sequels and remakes, the worst rmeakes for me are the ones of foreign horror films, as they dumb everything down and throw in tons of jump scares and lots of annoying flashy edits, Shutter and One Missed Call being the worst ones.

If there's any film that deserves a sequel, it's The Incredibles, why oh why didn't Pixar have to makes a sequel to Cars instead? when nobody really wanted a sequel to that film to beign with. I hate those damn Pirate films with every fiber of my being, and the fact that we'll probably end up getting another one fills me with rage, Paranormal Acitvity 3 looks beyond awful and I hope agianst all odds that it's the last one in the series.

Remake Fantastic Voyage

If there's one concept that deserves updated special effects, it's this one, a trip inside the human body. The only movie I know that tried this is Innerspace, which was really a comedy.

Rather than remake it, why don't they just make more viking movies? They have all the elements for massive, bloody epics. I've always wondered why they aren't used more often... and most viking movies are pretty shit (Pathfinder... ugh.)

Whoa there. Most of these might be remake candidates (Them, certainly) but leave Alfredo alone! That movie nailed it the first time. Any remake wouldn't be able to come close to Bloody Sam's version.

I like Alfredo too. But I'm curious to see another filmmaker take a shot at it. and its not some sacred classic, more of a cult film.

now Wild Bunch on the other hand...

Yeah, great family film that one.

Not too late for a sequel. Crowe and Bettanny are both in reasonable shape still.

Brotherhood of the Wolf: I love this movie and I rewatch it frequently just to spend time with the characters again. I would love to see what happens to them in Africa...

Evil Dead, with Diablo Cody writing the screenplay.

Wait, that's actually happening...

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

I would love to revisit these wonderful characters.

Maybe I have been talking about this movie too much for the last year, but it deserves it. So, so happy to see it finally released in the US. September 30, if I recall correctly.

The Incredibles is a film that immediately jumped to mind as deserving of a sequel.

I did some digging, and Brad Bird has said there is in fact a sequel in production right now.
