To quote Arthur C. Clarke, author of the screenplay: "If you understand '2001' completely, we failed. We wanted to raise far more questions than we answered."

That sounds pretty close to nonsensical to me.

The only thing that sounds a little nonsensical is Arthur C. Clarke's quote. Sure, the film poses lots of questions, but we also get lots of answers. The ending happens to be my favourite part of the movie.

High and Low closely followed by Samurai Rebellion,

My favorite 1960s American film is The Apartment

No, it's pretty much incomprehensible unless you read the book, too. And that was the intent, that the book and the movie go together. It's more an early experiment in multi-media than a stand-alone movie.

Anyway, I'd probably pick Psycho as the best movie of the decade.

I think Psycho is objectively the best choice. It went beyond simply changing the medium. It changed the type of film a director would want to make, forever.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for me.

Couldn't do a good job ranking after that. Goldfinger and Psycho would probably be shooting it out for 2 and 3. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Yojimbo might be fighting for 4 and 5.
