Post The Simpsons
(Surprised that there hasn't been a topic added for it yet. Probably because it's been discussed so much elsewhere on the board. But might as well add one.)

There was a time (between 1992-1999) when this was easily the best show on TV. It hasn't started to suck as certain shows past their expiration date have. But it has been on a descent into being just another sitcom for the past 12 years or so. I can understand why many people don't want to see it cancelled: it's enough of an institution. But I also have no desire to see it turn into the post-Pump Aerosmith of American TV either.

In a sense, the best way for it to have ended would have been to pulled the plug with the movie and gone all-out on the movie. In other words, done what Trey Parker and Matt Stone did with the South Park movie: pushed it as far as it could go.

The main problem is that almost every animated show that came along since The Simpsons rips them off in some way or another. But South Park (and to a lesser extent Family Guy) are taking that to newer levels than The Simpsons does nowadays and doing it better. All In The Family is definitely one of the greatest, most intelligent sitcoms of all-time. But it lost most of its edge when the Jefersons and Stivics were out of the picture.

Agree? Disagree? That's what this is all about.

I disagree, I think South Park is one of the single most overrated shows on the planet, I think it's painfully unfunny(that Jersey Shore episode was one of the worst things i've ever seen, so stupid!  ) course it probably dosen't help that i'm not an extreme liberterian like Matt and Trey, so I don't get what they're trying to say alot of the time. Also there's quite a few people who like Post-Pump Aerosmith(in fact, I haven't heard of too many people that disliked that phase of the band, i've never really been that big on Aersomith myself though) so that's not really the best example. I can see why people want the show to get cancelled, and the writers admitted as much that they've run out of ideas several times over, but you shouldn't blame them for the series demise, if there's anyone you should blame it's FOX, they've got no plans to cancel The Simpsons and they're gonna keep the sohw running for as long as possible. The show might not be as good as it once was, but it's still better then most of what passes for entertainment nowadays(Bob's Burgers? you've got to be fucking kidding me! )and i'm going to keep on watching the show until the very end.

P.S. Jeff, what are your thoughts on Family Guy, The Cleveland Show and American Dad?

The Simpsons will keep on keeping on. I lost interest in it ages ago, but if people are still enjoying it, then they might as well keep it going. I’ve got Seasons 3-9 on DVD and I don’t need to go any further. No sense wasting my time watching something mediocre when there’s still so many great shows I haven’t watched. Like Bob’s Burgers. The few episodes I’ve seen so far are fantastic. I just love Loren Bouchard’s style of humour.

I don’t get Family Guy though. Or anything Seth McFarlane does for that matter.
