Can anyone give me a general overview of how the Toronto film festival works? I've never been to any major film festival, but I want to try and make it up to Toronto this year.

well, we all know James attends toronto, doesn't he? maybe he can shine some light. i myself haven't even seen anything even remotely resembling a film festival.but i believe you can buy tickets to the things you'll like to see on the website. after that...well, just walk into screenings. all of the events are in a certain defined area, i believe.

When we get a little closer, I'll write a primer for ReelThoughts. In the meantime, if you're interested in going, start researching hotels. It's a good idea to book them within the next 1-2 months because they tend to fill up. Also, if you're traveling by plane, start looking into flights.

My friend landed tickets to The Human Stain premier at the Chicago Film Festival in '03 or '04. Some big shots were there. It was an interesting night. Saw Harold Ramis as well. He bought the tickets online. My guess is you could do the same for Toronto.

If you want a cheap lodging option then I'd recommend Global Backpackers on the corner of King and Spadina. Good place, fair prices and not far from downtown.
