Ah, New Order. That was a relatively good one. Apart from John Barnes rapping. That's cringeworthy.

The best football song - and sort of topical as well - is the Brazilian Funk masterpiece "Ponta de Lanca Africano (Umbabarauma)" by Jorge Ben (who also wrote Bossanova classics such as "Mais que Nada"). But I believe it's a Flamengo-specific song.

As for German World Cup songs, you have guessed correctly that they are mostly really crap. In the 70ies and 80ies, at least you could bring up the excuse that it was the footballers themselves singing the songs! The oompah-tastic "Fußball ist unser Leben" ("Football is our Life") from 1974 is probably the best of the bunch, simply because it works as a terrace chant. It is also a lot more imaginative than the song for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, titled ... "Olé Espana". They must have thought long and hard about that one. If I remember it correctly, someone at the German FA wised up after 1990 so, for a while, they hired hot international stars to do the official German World Cup song, in case of the 1994 World Cup in the USA the Village People! You may laugh, but it was a very fitting combination given that both, band and team, were way past their prime and (disco) pants. (Quarterfinal exit to Bulgaria, dear oh dear.)

I don't even know whether there's still an official German World Cup song. I remember a lot of artists and bands jumping the 2006 Germany World Cup bandwagon, but don't think any of the songs was "official". From 2010, I only remember this dreadful Shakira song "Waka Waka", which was FIFA sanctioned, I think.

I have a real nostalgia for Italia 90.

I was 8, it was the first tournament I watched. I remember the borefest draw v Ireland, Platt's awesome goal against Belgium. The nailbiter v Cameroon, and of course in surgical detail the loss to Germany in the semis. But I also remember how good Germany were. Matthaus was perhaps the best the centre mid in the world. Andreas Brehme, 2-footed, goal scoring leftback - what the hell was that guy on??!!

And that was a cracking song, as far as football songs go.

And the same mood, the same atmosphere in that song, is carried out through the entire album. It's excellent.

I'm very much a fan of The Jam and Joy Division. I would probably choose different songs as my favorites among them, but still...respect.

That's Entertainment, I listened to for the first time in ages yesterday.

When I was a bit younger, all I heard was the tune - which is still very good. Now I dig the heartfelt lyrics. Brilliantly sum up urban English life for millions - probably tens of millions when it was written 30-odd years ago.

Angry, is how I'd sum up a young Paul Weller.
