Post Right or Copyright?
Top of the morning, friends and fiends alike. I have a question to ask, the answer of which I was wondering one of you might possess.

I'm in the process of writing a book (I'm keeping mum on the specifics for now), and I was thinking of including poster/DVD cover art. My dilemma is that, when it comes to getting permission to use images like these, I've heard both sides of the argument; I've been told that I don't need to pay to use them because they're being used in a book that's comprised of film commentary (as long as I credit the owners), and I've been told that I need permission no matter what, that if I want to use poster art, I have to pony up the cash.

I'm just curious to know if anyone here knows for sure what the answer is. It'd be very much appreciated, and it'd definitely set my mind at ease!

If you're using it for critical purposes, you're protected by law. Same goes for parodies.

That's not to say that they can't try to cause trouble by dragging you into court and forcing you to argue that you're using it for critical purposes, but I doubt they'd waste their time and money on a pointless lawsuit.
