Post National Spelling Bee and Spellbound
Anyone watching the National Spelling Bee today? It's really engaging television. And, if you haven't seen the documentary Spellbound, I highly recommend it.

I'm not sure that I'd actually watch but I do like the idea of the Spelling Bee. We're always quick to praise athletic pursuits but there's little interest in contests of intelligence. That's somewhat understandable but not necessarily correct. So, power to the kids that take part. I certainly can't spell as well as them*.

*On the other hand, those poor children have no idea how to properly spell "colour" or "honour" or anything that should end in "-our"

They study spelling from more of a scientific perspective, which enables them to spell many words that they've not actually seen.

What a twat you are with all those U's. I wonder if they can spell the word "our" correctly? Also, how can the word "or" exist in the silly version of the English language you use? Hypocrisy!!!!

I've heard great things about the doc, but never actually seen it. I will admit to watching the National Spelling Bee on ESPN during my adolescence. Firefly's right, it's downright riveting television. I'm a sucker for any sort of competition where pressure is squarely on the shoulders of an individual, and a spelling bee certainly qualifies. Watching such young kids in that situation makes it even more impressive. It's a fantastic competition.

Also, this girl won the first one that I watched. She was really, really odd:
