 Re: Most Depressing Oscar Winners?
The first time I watched the Oscars was for 2000 movies, the year Gladiator won. I was not happy because I thought the movie was a muddled, uninspired mess, and somehow it managed to win. Granted, not all of it is bad. Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix are very good in the film, but in the end, I just didn't care what happened. I really wanted Traffic to win and I was very disappointed when it didn't. Even now, the movie holds up very well, I think, especially when you consider the bloodbath in Mexico right now.

 Re: Most Depressing Oscar Winners?
Of course... Schindler's List. Doesn't get more depressing than that. Maybe one of the best movies of all time but definetly not a date movie

 Re: Most Depressing Oscar Winners?
Crash winning in 2005 was beyond a joke. So many brilliant movies that year and that cliched piece of crap wins? Yes, I know it's not the point of the thread, but still

 Re: Most Depressing Oscar Winners?
I had a co-worker FLIP OUT on me because I called that movie ridiculous. It was so contrived that it should of had a giant blinking neon sign that said "THIS MOVIE IS ABOUT RACISM."

Some more depressing, Oscar-nominated films I don't think were mentioned:
A Simple Plan, Equus, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, In the Bedroom, Missing, The Crying Game, Frances, Silkwood, The Last Temptation of Christ, Leaving Las Vegas, The Days of Wine and Roses, Longtime Companion, Affliction and The Killing Fields.

 Re: Most Depressing Oscar Winners?
Tell me about it. To be considered a good movie was one thing, but to win the Oscar?!

 Re: Most Depressing Oscar Winners?
I've said this before on other boards, but: I don't really like Crash, but I'm glad it won. It's the kind of film that the Academy usually ignores - a film that tries to achieve something enormous, that sets its sights high... and fails. Too often the Academy rewards the safe, but unremarkable films (This year that would be Frost/Nixon or Ben. Button). Too often they celebrate polished mediocrity rather than ambitious films that are rough around the edges.

 Re: Most Depressing Oscar Winners?
This thread has been a lie...
'Cries And Whispers' received a nod for Best Director. If this isn't first, it's pretty damn close.
