i keep wondering this, did you foresee that only 12% or so posts would be actually doing what you started this forum to do? commenting and discussing your writing, precisely and only that?

the beast you've created, i like it. :)

Now I'm all nostalgic for the good old days of the internet, grant it I was about 7 years old during the internet's primitive early days. Back then though I remembered the internet as some magical thing that you couldn't truly understand, and something that my parent's said would never catch on (ha). Now the internet is just a place to find free porn and illegal downloads of crappy movies like X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

This also reminded me of the distinct lack of trolls and flame wars on the forums right now. I'm surprised how civil it is on here, movies can be a touchy subject especially when you start to deal with the fanboys and fangirls. It seems you attract a more mature audience than sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB since those sites suffer from flame wars pretty badly, although the average user on those sites is a pissed off 16 year old male.

I'd gladly volunteer to be Reelview's first troll if you'd like some controversy on the forums.

Re: Twitter

I think as a social environment thing, it's a fad, just like MySpace/Facebook. Especially now that it's gone mainstream and millions are Tweeting only to rub texts with celebrities (which can be fun, in it's way). The tech/concept itself, however, does have some potential for business/publicity uses.

I think Twitter could be a decent publicity/hit-generating thing for you, at least for a while, if used right - but it would be, well, yet more work. Probably not worth the hassle (yet), I'd agree.

There was one hanging around for a while but I don't know where he took off to... he voiced much love for The Wire and then disappeared. I'd name names but that would be uncouthe. He wasn't even all that bad, really. The torch has been passed to you.

The Amazon click through revenue might go up if you did a DVD release column. I think you may have addressed this before and stated you're not a fan, but I'd like to go on record saying I enjoy flipping through these columns.

Have you considered an iPhone app that contains your reviews and reelthoughts? I'm not savvy enough to have any grasp on the financial implications of this (positive or negative), but it's something I would definitely use, so I imagine others would as well.

Regardless, I thoroughly enjoy the addition of the forum and am excited about trailers being included with the reviews. I think you're doing a masterful job with Reelviews.

Much appreciated JB. Your dedication to the site is something that benefits us all. As usual, an articulate, well written ReelThought. It's always interesting to hear what goes into the nuts and bolts operations of the site, and to get a glimpse of what is in the future. I guess JB is what you would call a website auteur. I personally am excited for the trailers with the reviews. What about big budget movies that have a teaser and 1 or 2 more trailers. Will you show the most recent trailer since they will be accompanying reviews?

Again James, a very well-written ReelThoughts, and to reiterate what PeachyPete said, I hope you don't feel your work goes unappreciated around here. I can't imagine having a full-time job, seeing all these movies, and then doing the sometimes thankless work on the site. I'd go crazy.

And I agree with MsHarlaus: I'd hold off on the Twitter.

I, for one, would like to see a live movie review or two with JB "in the armchair". I've never heard his voice and have only seen one or two pictures.

Great write-up and kudos to everybody on keeping things civil.

James, don't bother with twitter, there is nothing more annoying on the internet today I think.

I think a kind of "fire side chat" with Berardinelli would be an interesting addition to the site.

I like to see a live video of JB if it's going to be an extremely negative review. I like to see him ranting and raving.

You have no idea of the ceaseless work being carried on in the background by the mods as we try to keep this mad crowd under control :-)

No kidding. Everyone here is so well-behaved and respectful. It's only a matter of time before someone cracks and peppers every single post with unconnected profanities, threats of violence, and hysterical rants about black helicopters.

fire side chat - complete with a robe, a book in his hand, a pipe and a butler serving the midnight tea. a green tea and darjeeling blend with a splash of vodka.
make his voice deep.
this could all take place in a gothic mansion.

Ive been here from pretty much day one (inc beta testing) and even though I haven't been around as much as I'd like it amazes me that there hasn't been any serious flame-wars. People can get pretty passionate and opinionated about movies so you'd imagine there'd be something, but as far as I know there hasn't which is quite frankly incredible.

Hey JB...

Do you have any Reelviews screen captures to post? You got me interested. I've been using the net on at least a semi-regular basis since '97 and have forgotten all of the old looks. Each time Hotmail is upgraded I think "wow, this is high tech". How quickly I forget the primitive edition of the past.
