Can today's Bond really be that imitative of Bourne if Bourne is essentially a spy character in the Bond archetype?

Who's imitating whom?

Bond came first and had his own identity that we all know from the 60s until die another day , then Bourne came with his own identity like the movie Bourne's identity and hit very strongly after the 9/11. Damon used to make fun of Bond and Bond producers instead of sticking to their guns , they hired Daniel Craig lol. A business decision many would call it. At the time might have made sense. Does it still make sense? Time will tell. I am personally getting tired but I have not seen Skyfall yet

Bourne is a rogue ex-CIA agent who defends himself from the bad guys behind the CIA by going after them after being provoked lol which also has good guys (or gals in this case). now, from Wikipedia

The character of Bourne in the films is a very quick-thinking, linear type of person who moves quickly and brutally towards his goal. He gives the impression of someone who has been severely traumatized. He is tormented by fragment memories of his past. He is highly adept at martial arts, and appears to retain his knowledge of how to remain 'off-the-grid' even if he cannot recall how he learned such skills. He also shows an immediate ability to utilize lateral thinking to solve problems. He often uses improvised weapons, for example using a pen to stab an assassin in The Bourne Identity, utilizing a wrapped up magazine as a blunt object in The Bourne Supremacy and using a book and a towel to kill an opponent in The Bourne Ultimatum. He is shown using tactical improvisation such as using a fan, torch light, and tape to fake his location (The Bourne Ultimatum) and gas, a toaster, and a magazine to cause an explosion (The Bourne Supremacy). He is also proficient with firearms, explosives, electronics and evasive protocols—for moving, driving, and the like

Bourne has his own identity and it is not copying bond in any way. But Bond has changed since Craig came aboard there in what I would call a "strong influence"
as described in here

What was not missed on audiences of Casino Royale, however, was that the grimmer, new-look Bond looked an awful lot like the Jason Bourne. The resemblance was especially striking in action sequences that were revved-up—or too "violent," as Bond alum Roger Moore recently put it.

So, can Bond ever top Bourne if he's trying to be Bourne?

A recent Fandango poll would seem to make the task difficult. Fifty-two percent of respondents said they prefered Damon's Bourne to Craig's Bond, compared to 48 percent who sided with 007. (Fandango and E! Online are both owned by Comcast.)

But to Deborah Lipp, author of The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book, the question is all wrong. The Craig Bond, she says, is what Bond has always been.

"Everything changes the James Bond series. They're very in touch with the moment," Lipp says. "Just the way Live and Let Die was influenced by blaxploitation, just the way Moonraker was influenced by Star Wars. So, sure [Bourne] is an influence."

"But it's not an imitation."

In the first third of skyfall apparently Bond is more Bourne but at the end is Bond again HaHa

I think that Bond should be Bond and let Bourne be Bourne (If Damon ever care to do the role again). In the 60s , tons of spy movies (and TV series) came with a strong influence of Connery's Bond ;-)

When I see Skyfall, I will assess it against the main Bond movie traits such as:

Opening scene
Bond Girls
and of course Bond himself ;-)

I will definitely write about it here
